Assassin's Creed 1 not loading/launching
Sooo I've gone through almost every post up here about AC 1 not working or loading. I've done pretty much everything under a google search....I can try to list a few of them here...
-Uninstalled Reinstalled
-installed on a secondary SSD (D drive)
-installed on my main C drive
-Changed name of DX9/10
-Installed Uplay for luls
-Github had a "work around" with python that didn't work
-Changed the launch files to compatibility mode for every single version
-Tried launching all .exe's as Administrator
-Restarted computer 18032098342059 times
-Bought the game on Ubisofts website and on tried launching the game on the Uplay launcher and that ALSO DIDN'T WORK.....
-Installed Nvidia Drivers, DX drivers, and Microsoft Visual C++ updated drivers

AAANNND I think that's it.....

Been at this about 4 hours now....I'm about to give up....
intel i7 9700k
Nvidia 1080ti

Please...someone end my suffering here....I just want to relive this game and play it on my PC....

Try this list of potential fixes below; apologies if you've already attempted any of them:
  1. See this excerpt from PCGamingWiki[www.pcgamingwiki.com]:
Enable Low Latency Mode via Nvidia Control Panel or similar

    For Nvidia GPUs:
    1. Right-click the desktop and click Nvidia Control Panel.

    2. Open the Manage 3D settings screen (refer to this help article[www.nvidia.com]).

    3. In the Manage 3D settings screen, under the Global Settings tab, set the Low Latency Mode option to On or Ultra (may need to try both for best effect).

Alternatively, click the Program Settings tab, click the Add button, add Assassin's Creed, and likewise set the Low Latency Mode option to On or Ultra, if you just want to tweak for Assassin's Creed.

See this help article[www.nvidia.com] on the features list in the Manage 3D settings screen.

    4. Click the Apply button.

    5. Launch Assassin's Creed and check if problem is resolved.

    For AMD GPUs:
    1. Right-click the desktop and click AMD Radeon Software.

    2. Refer to this help article[www.amd.com] on how to set low latency (see the Configuring GPU Performance > Memory Timing section).

    3. Launch Assassin's Creed and check if problem is resolved.

  2. If that doesn't work...

See this other excerpt from PCGamingWiki[www.pcgamingwiki.com]
    • The game may try to connect to Ubisoft servers, which could be down, resulting in choppy audio in-game and freezing.
    • Edit your hosts file
    1. Go to
      %WINDIR%[www.pcgamingwiki.com]\System32\drivers\etc
      .
    2. Open the file
      hosts
with NotePad, and add the following IP addresses at the end:
      216.98.48.18 127.0.0.1 216.98.48.53 127.0.0.1 216.98.48.57 127.0.0.1 216.98.48.133 127.0.0.1 216.98.48.134 127.0.0.1

This Steam guide covers the instructions too:
    https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=278358495

  3. If that doesn't work...

Block Assassin's Creed in your firewall. See this post for instructions on how to do this in Windows Defender Firewall.

  4. If that doesn't work...

See this other excerpt from PCGamingWiki[www.pcgamingwiki.com]:
    • Disable your internet connection
    • You have to do this every time before playing the game.

  5. If that doesn't work...
    https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=206787236
(Might be relevant, they're instructions for running in program compatibility mode which resolved known issues in Windows 7, though I'm not sure about Windows 10.)

  6. If none of these work, check TweakGuides[tweakguides.pcgamingwiki.com] for AC troubleshooting tips.

I did forget a few things I tried in my previous post....
-Windows defender adding exceptions.
-Also I tried on 2 other computers, a work laptop and my roommates computer, both launched the game without problems.
-Disconnected the ethernet
So obviously there's something blocking it on this computer...
Looked over msinfo32 error reporting and it's giving a faulty application name to the DX10.exe of the game....
Tried some of the listed troubleshoots above and it's the same thing every time, starts to load, stops, play button highlights again. Doesn't even load into the game just stops before it can even get there.

Guys, calm down.

It might have to do with the .exe file. Why? I don't know.

It happened to me because I messed around with some mod (I think it was AC Overhaul) and for some reason the game wouldn't load/start anymore.

To fix it, I replaced 'AssassinsCreed_Game.exe' with 'AssassinsCreed_Dx10.exe' by renaming 'AssassinsCreed_Dx10.exe' as 'AssassinsCreed_Game.exe' and deleting the original.

It's worked like charm.

Let me know if that works. If it doesn't work, just validate integrity of files and all the files will be back to their original state.

Nope tried that too, it gives me an error says something about how the file name is incorrect sooooo nope that did not work. I've tried running it in compatibility mode under the administrator and still nothing it starts "running . . ." then stops play button comes highlighted again and it just doesn't load passed that. I asked my roommate to install the game worked fine for him without any troubleshooting.

Also I tried re-installing windows. That did not work either. Idk what is wrong i can't figure it out but I've given up at this point since theres nothing more I can do.

Mmm. Are you sure you're doing it right?

Remember, delete ''AssassinsCreed_Game.exe'', then rename 'AssassinsCreed_Dx10.exe' as ''AssassinsCreed_Game.exe'' Not the other way around.

That way Steam can locate the .exe file and boot the game.

Just for some peace of mind. I ran into the same problem with a Ryzen 3950 build. Tried everything you tried, even, due to an unrelated issue had to reinstall Windows 10 and everything with it from scratch, no dice. So I did some experimenting, It looks like the problem is the Detection app crashes on any processor with 8 or more cores.

- Ryzen 3950 (16 cores) didn't work GTX 2080Ti,
- Threadripper 1950 (16 cores) didn't work GTX 1080Ti,
- i7 9700k (8 cores) didn't work GTX 1080Ti,
- i7 9750h (6 cores) worked Radeon Pro 5500m
- i7 8750h (6 cores) worked GTX 1660Ti

So if you have a processor with more than 6 cores I think your SOL unless Ubisoft releases an update which seems unlikely

I'm also running a ryzen 3950x got the game to run but i can't stream it like this
run the dtx 10 exe C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Assassins Creed\AssassinsCreed_Dx10.exe
run in compatability mode for windows 98 (only allows access to 1 core)
run as admin
run with nic disabled
game will run fine but the second the nic is plugged back in it closes
anyone got any other ideas to try?

I'm on windows 7, and I deleted the "AssassinsCreed_Game" and "AssassinsCreed_Dx10" and renamed "AssassinsCreed_Dx9" to AssassinsCreed_Game and that worked for me

The processor cores thing might be it. I am having the same problems and have tried all of the "fixes" suggested across the discussions and the internet. I am using a 10700k and a 2080ti.

Is there a way to trick the game into thinking you have a processor with less cores? The compatibility mode suggestion for windows 98 did not work for me. I saw someone on a different discussion that said there is Ryzen software that allows Ryzen CPUs to enter a game mode that disables some of the cores and helps compatibility with older games. Is there a counterpart for Intel?
MystRunner916 Aug 16, 2020 @ 6:07pm
It would be great to get this fix resolved but on a game this old unless a person makes a mod to fix it I doubt that would happen.

Now I have tried MOST of the pcgamingwiki's fixes. Only one would work reliably for me and that was.....unplug the ethernet cable. AssCreed pings ubisoft servers during certain times and events during the game. If it doesn't receive a ping back then the game crashes. I've since came to the conclusion those servers are unfortunatly not active anymore. But disconnecting the computer entirely from the internet solved my issue and allowed play with out any other fiddling. Before you ask yes i did attempt to block using my firewall and that did zilch.

Now this all being said I had a friend once back when we were intensivly trouble shooting this who suggesting using command prompt and adding routes for the listed ubisoft IPs that the game pings. I never did try this trick but the IPs are the same ones you copy to the 'hosts' file in the one fix.

Only way to fix this thing is to disable your internet connection before you play, end of story. You can do it any way you want, you can unplug the network cable, or use my favorite: go to your network adapter properties and disable it, you can enable everything back after you exit from the game, no need to tinker with anything more than that

but they it cannot be streamed which is why I bought this game...

This is what worked for me if you have a Ryzen processor:

"
1) Install latest Ryzen Master
2) Run the Ryzen Master tool
3) Select Game Mode profile and click Apply
It will ask to restart the PC, do that.
4) When the PC boots back up, click OK to launch the Ryzen Master
5) Run the game

Just make sure that you have disabled Compatibility modes for the exes otherwise the game will crash after first 2-3 it has launched.

Thankyou this worked for me.
on my threadripper 3990x, going from 64 cores down to 16 cores (1/4th of the corecount) and im now finally able to run the game.

this is also the solution for a different game i had the same problem with which was Dawn of war 2,
