Cloud saves?
Do Steam cloud saves work with this game?

I played 19 long hours of Assassin's Creed and I guess (hope) I was near the end. Then bought a new hdd. I wiped and sold my old drive. When I re-installed my games all my saves/progress were still there except for this game. I have to start from the beginning.

I didn't play the AC games when they came out but thought I should try to catch up. I have read AC1 is repetitive and boring but nevertheless wanted to complete it before moving onto #2.

Am I going to miss anything if I simply forget about it and move on?

No steam cloud aren't available on ubisoft games. Ubisoft uses their own cloud saving system. Anything that uses 2009 or later has cloud saves. AC1 is too old and needs to be manually backed up and ac4 has it disabled because of issues and also needs to be manually backed up.

Oh no. Thank you for your help.
How do I manually back it up?

I wonder why the GOG version has cloud saves and the Steam version doesn't. Ubisoft are totally bizarre neglecting their older titles in regards to things like this.

I wonder if it's possible to transfer the save game between the Steam and GOG versions.

So steam and GOG releases of Assassin’s Creed: Director’s Cut share the same local save folder so we can take advantage of that. You can play on Steam and then by opening AC! on GOG Galaxy it will pick up and upload your progress to the cloud automatically.

1. Install Both Clients

Use the same Windows user account to install Assassin’s Creed Director’s Cut on Steam and GOG Galaxy.

2. Enable GOG Cloud Saves

In GOG Galaxy → Settings → Game Features, tick Enable Cloud Saves (or override per‑game).

3. Play on Steam

Launch and play via Steam; your progress writes to %APPDATA%\Ubisoft\Assassin’s Creed\Saved Games.

4. Close and Launch GOG

Start the GOG Assassins creed directors cut version through Galaxy (not the .exe directly); Galaxy will detect and upload any new or changed save files from that same folder.

5. Verify in GOG Cloud

In GOG Galaxy or on GOG.com, open your Cloud Saves dashboard to confirm your Director’s Cut files have synced.

6. Watch the 200 MB Cap (This is just in case)

Keep your total save data under 200 MB or back up the %APPDATA%\Ubisoft\Assassin’s Creed\Saved Games folder manually to avoid sync failures.
