So, you should probably try that and see if it fixes your problem.
I expect problems with dinput pads but not xinput pads, so the fact that these controller are having problems is kind of weird though...
But when I look at the control customization options, it only offers
Something extra that needs to be done in order for the game to detect gamepad?
There is an "x360ce" solution, as explained on PCGamingWiki[www.pcgamingwiki.com]:

If you still have issues with remapping the controller buttons - and the above information doesn't help - see general workarounds on PCGamingWiki[www.pcgamingwiki.com].
I plugged out my old Xbox 360 wireless from my other computer and connected to this gaming computer, and sure enough the game can detect the Xbox 360 controller. But, it also detects the Xbox One controller! (which is connected via a separate Xbox One wireless adapter.)
If I plug out the Xbox 360 wireless adapter, the game cannot find the Xbox One controller again. So something about the presence of the Xbox 360 controller makes the Xbox One controller visible to the game too. Mysterious.
On testing with the Xbox 360 controller, indeed I found the button/stick mappings rather messed up. And then while re-mapping the buttons, it suddenly inexplicably swap directions for the D-pad (hat switch); up <-> down; left <-> right; which made menu navigation with d-pad counter intuitive.
I'll have to read through the other articles to get some idea on what's wrong with this game. Thanks.

After many tests, it appears for my system I have to alter the resultant x360ce.ini configuration file to stop the controller from persisting high profile mode even without pressing RT.

As for the supported controllers, the only officially supported controller on Steam for this game is the Xbox 360 controller, which can be viewed on the system requirements of the game's Steam Store page.
Whilst other controllers may work with the game, their performance is not guaranteed, which is why you may run into problems such as incorrect mapping.
For these reasons, we would advise using an Xbox 360 controller where possible and if you do not have this option, to experiment changing some of the controller settings in the Steam menu as shown in this guide > https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/steam_controller/getting_started_for_players

Sorry to hear about your broken Xbox 360 controller.
Were you able to try the steps given in the article linked by Ubi-Milky? > https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/steam_controller/getting_started_for_players
Regrettably as other controllers are not officially supported we are limited in the support we can offer to players using alternative peripherals.
Please reach out should you have any further questions.
