I'd give AC2 a try :) A lot of my friends got hooked on with the it rather than the first one.
Follow ups Brotherhood and Revelations are also up there.
Eh... redeemed is a very poor choice of words, that implies that the first game was not popular when it came out.
AC2 is better and improves upon the gameplay, but the first game when it came out for the xbox 360 was absolutely revolutionary. Inferior to many of the sequels, but none of the sequels would exist today if it wasn't for the huge success of the first game.

Personally I loved playing AC1, but then I got to play AC2 and I was mindblown by both graphics and gameplay (much more stuff to do, and you don't have to replay ALL the tasks if you missed something in a level and want to complete it.)
Then I went onto brotherhood and I was like :O it gets even better.
I just finished brotherhood's plot, i'm still doing some unfinished stuff in there because it's just that good. And i don't feel like I finished it if I didn't do some of this.
Then soon i'll be onto revelations.
can't wait to continue though
AC1 is the first AC game I played, and it was pretty impressive at first, but I stopped playing it without getting too far into it because it didn't feel like the gameplay was focused or meaningful enough. It felt repetitive and a bit barren to me, when it first released (though I now have a better appreciation for it, and have more patience for games in general). I played a bit of AC2 when it came out, but didn't progress too far into the game.
I've since, more recently, gone back to AC2 after playing and completing AC4, AC3, Rogue, and much of Unity and Syndicate.
I think AC2 is good, but having played AC4 all the way through, and it being the first AC game I was drawn into and completed, AC2 feels very repetitive and lacking in scope to me. It has great music, it has a great theme, and it has a great start to the game, but after some hours it's just been doing the same basic type of missions over and over again. I hope it improves later on in the game (I'm 16 hours into it), but there's clearly so much more to AC3, AC4, and Rogue that AC2 feels a bit simplistic and lacking in dimension by comparison.
So, I'm wondering if people who think AC2 is the best think so because it was the first game of the series that they got into, and it made the biggest impression on them.
I fell in love with AC1 because it featured Jeruzalem and I have been there as a kid on a holiday I got all happy and nostalgic playing it :') after that I wanted to see the rest of the plot and AC2 was just so wicked much better, then brotherhood was a bit of a disappointment because it featured only one location. (the calling other assassins thing is supreme though!)
not far enough into brotherhood yet to know if it's better or not, it did give me an extra layer of emersion on civilization 3 though because of the byzantines and the constantinopel/istanbul thing :) I have been busy playing the games for a couple of years now though it's a slow process :')
