Local Co-Op Not Working

I have had a continuous issue where I cannot connect a controller, wired or wireless, and play co-op reliably. Is there something I'm missing? I would like to play this at parties with friends but it makes every input control 1P and doesn't let you move the other characters.

What is your controller? You may be using a controller that we do not support.

If you do not support it, your controller may be configured with a setting that is assigned to the keyboard.

To be sure, try setting each action as shown in the attached image in Option - Game Pad Config.

You may be able to get it to work by displaying the Controller Layout screen in Steam and applying Official Layout.

I checked the official layout (currently using ps5 controller, wired) and it said it worked as a ps4 controller. When I open the game into a local 2 player lobby, both the keyboard and the ps5 controller only control p1. I cannot move the other characters with any inputs I can see.

it has the same issue when I use my xbox elite series controller (also wired). steam controller layout panel describes it as xbox360 controller and both keyboard and the xbox controller only move the blue p1 character.

The keyboard does not change the operating character when a controller is connected; WASD is 1P and the arrow keys are 2P. If you want to play 2 players with a keyboard and a controller, control the keyboard with the arrow keys or assign the keys you prefer in the KEYBOARD CONFIG in OPTION.

Same question. How to play if I want to play with 3 local players?

Basically, you just plug in three controllers and you can control each of the characters, can't you play?

When I tried that, each controller input and the keyboard only controlled player 1, the blue character. The multiple inputs all siphoned into controlling one character instead of being separate inputs for separate characters making it impossible to play multiplayer locally.
