how to choose color

how do you choose a color in local play? or are you forced to play as red and blue? im playing with 1 other person

Sorry, in Local Play Mode, the color is fixed to the player number.

You need to connect a lot of controllers, or set the assignment to 3P or later in KeyboadConfig in the Option Menu.;

Yes, you can change it in online play. Although, if the color you've chosen is already picked by another player, it will automatically change your color without you having the chance to change it yourself.
