Fortunately, I realized the sweet routes are longer while the friend routes are shorter (and contain largely the same scenes!) I've been playing a characters sweet route first, then skipping manually and stopping during the friend route when it looks like I've come across new dialogue. It's been working out for me that way so far!
I've used Ren'Py before and this function is built-in with no need for input from the developer, so it really makes me wonder what they could have possibly done to break it. Not gonna lie, I find it pretty annoying as someone who likes to see every ending in VNs; hope to see this get fixed eventually.
