Working slot frustrations
So this is a minor frustration, but as my city gets bigger it becomes more and more frustrating. Workers dont auto fill open slots, so when they die the slots just become empty leaving me to have to micromanage checking my buildings every minute or two, or else I run into a disaster because a bunch of smiths died and noone took their jobs and now the entire city has no toold.

You can turn on/off auto employ (jobs) in the settings>display>game (on the right side)
I have auto employ turned on, it doesnt always do its job.

Once again, text cross posts don't settle issues like this ... screenshot(s) needed.

Consult Steam if you need a 'how to' insert screenshots.

Slots can only auto-fill if you have labourers available at the exact time someone dies. If there are work slots open but nobody to fill them, then you have to decide which jobs are most important, reassigning workers appropriately. This makes sense and the game cannot do this for you.

Oh yeah, because showing a picture of an empty worker slot and available workers tells you so much more then me explaining it.

I mean it 100% could, a simple 'when a laborer becomes available assign them to the least recently vacated slot. Simeple, done and done.

Sure, I guess. That would mean employing workers with no regard for where they live, resulting in inefficiencies I would want to avoid. But I understand it may make it mildly less frustrating :)

I wouldn't want the game to back fill jobs because I use the profession menu on the toolbar to add and subtract workers to increase or slow down production of resources (and that requires work slots to be open). I also just like keeping a decent pool of unassigned laborers in general as a buffer against death waves just because it helps the overall efficiency of the town (the more options the AI has when assigning jobs and housing the better the results).

But I agree. An option to back fill open work slots in game settings seems doable--especially considering there's already the auto fill toggle. If you want it, I'm sure others would find it useful for the way they play too.

Sorry, just trying to be helpful. I meant using text + pics in describing an issue.

My point is: 'Settlement Survival' is a complicated game and sometimes just describing the problem that you are having with text doesn't do the job.

(No pun meant but creating an image of a game issue, often, shows you something you missed or shows the devs something they missed ,.. devs do read discussions posts.)

Also, usually, there are more readers of the thread than those who post to the thread and the problem you are encountering is, probably, good-to-know-about for those readers.

Hope my point is clearer.

You need to have enough temporary workers so that citizens can fill vacancies in a timely manner.

The 'bug' is still present, I have many many vacant positions and lots of labourers, but they aren't filling in the slots. and yes, its selected auto fill in the menu. A frustrating problem causing me to micromanage trivial things. Causing me to want to drop the game and play something else.

Have you tried saving and reloading? I find sometimes this get a little buggy as populations grow, so the odd save and reload seems to fix some issues. Not a perfect fix, but it might help.

Oddly it worked, but should I have to do that every time? Somewhat inconvenient. But thanks for the solution.
