Chapter 3 blackout

Every time during chapter 3, when the two balls retract in the left part of the scroll, the screen goes black and unresponsive while the music continues. I've fiddled with the graphical settings a bit but that made no difference. Admittedly, running the game through Proton's D3D emulation on a Mint system isn't the greatest guarantee of stability, but it's weird that this happens deep in the game.

Is there a way to unlock chapters to get past the sticking technical point?
