Minit Fun Racer is a super simple endless runner where you collect coins and race against the clock, but it has a wonderful upgrade system that makes for a great gameplay loop. The core game of minute one of the game versus minute 120 is the same, but the game feels completely different than it started.

If you like games like Ridiculous Fishing, you're gonna have a good time with Minit Fun Racer.

Our peculiar protagonist is back--only now faster and flashier than ever. When I saw there was a new game in the franchise AND that proceeds go to charity, I had to grab this game instantly. I'm sure that I will enjoy every Minit. :)

A person would need to be incredibly petty and critical to find fault with a game that is clearly made with love, where all proceeds go to charity.

Luckily, I am one such person.

First, the headline: This game scrolls from left-to-right at a pretty constant rate. If you play this game for more than ten minutes at a stretch, you'll notice that your field of view seems to continue warping leftward for a few minutes after you finish playing. For me personally, I noticed the muscles around my temples seemed to tense at this effect. If that sort of stuff tends not to effect you, great - otherwise, buyer beware.

Second, the difficulty. There are some pretty tight tolerances in this game, and the width of vehicles isn't especially well-telegraphed. I often found myself clipping vehicles I was trying to thread, and the upper border of the map in the sand area can be deceiving with whether a vehicle blocks its northernmost border.

Third, some of these dang goals. If you're a completionist like myself, be prepared for a bit of frustration in the latter half of your time with this game. I reduced the game speed from 60 FPS to 40 FPS, and that helped me clinch a few elusive goals that had evaded me previously.

Are those flaws enough for me to thumbs-down the game?

Not... quite. It's still a cute homage to Minit, and many of this game's quirks carry over from it. Minit, too, had a bit of jank involved and a difficulty that was near the upper limit of reasonable. If you liked Minit, you'll probably like Minit Fun Racer. Plan on this game being about 3 hours to 100% and spend (er, donate) what you feel is worth that time.

Right upfront, the reason to buy this game is to donate to charity. The devs have mentioned on Twitter that the first charities will be Doctor’s Without Borders and Special Effect. Think of it as a donation where you also end up getting a game. Now that that’s out of the way, I can say Minit Fun Racer is a pretty solid game even standing on its own.

Minit was a game I enjoyed, so I knew this experience wouldn’t disappoint. The protagonist from that game is cursed by a sword he finds which makes him die every sixty seconds. In Minit Fun Racer, you maintain that “constantly dying” mechanic, but this time you’re trying to race across a map. Throughout this little adventure, you control a constantly-driving scooter that you must navigate through traffic, over ramps, and around a variety of obstacles. A single hit to one of these solid objects is an end to your run wherever you collide. In the process, you must collect coins strewn about your path that increase your amount of time to live. If you run out of time, you die and the run ends where you fall.

The money you collect is used to buy a collection of upgrades. With these, you can make your journey much easier. Things like turning garbage cans into speed boosts, increasing coin values, and getting a helmet to protect you from a collision all make it much more feasible to succeed in making it to the end of the run. While on your journey, you can also complete challenges from a list that gives you bonus coins and a Steam achievement. These include things like hitting certain objects, delivering a pizza, and generally just doing well.

Minit Fun Racer is, in fact, fun. The biggest issue it has is that there’s not much to it. You drive through the traffic of a town and then through a rocky desert area and that’s it. It’s possible to finish a run in under a minute. However, the replayability aspect of it is gauging how far you can go. Once you do reach the end, you can restart while maintaining your progress and continuing the distance of your run. It doesn’t take long to buy all of the upgrades, but the challenges include things like finishing several laps in this process – and that can be pretty tough.

Overall, the real allure of Minit Fun Racer is donating money to charity and appreciating the work that these developers have done. If you like the black and white aesthetic of this game, you should definitely check out Minit. If you want a silly little arcade-style racing game where you’re trying to one-up your high score, this will certainly deliver that. Just don’t expect to spend more than an hour or two in it and you’ll have a good time!

Minit Fun Racer uses pixelated, black-and-white assets for the visuals. Despite being a short game, there are three biomes that you can see. Each looks great and unique, although I find it hard to figure out where the collision is on the upper and below edge in the second one. I died a lot on both sides, either because I didn't think I would crash or I didn't expect that I already reached the very far edge. The game only uses 1/3 of the screen for the game and it can be hard to notice the edges since both are black-colored.

Gameplay
Minit Fun Racer is a racing game with a twist. You have a timer on the top-left corner, and you will die if it runs out. In the beginning, it will be hard to go for a few miles since the timer you have is very short and your speed is very slow- I didn't know what happened when I died for the first time, even. Luckily, the game is easy enough to figure out. You'll learn quickly that you need to buy upgrades to find a way to extend that timer and finish the game.

The control sucks at first, which is made better after you buy an upgrade. You need to collect coins to increase your timer, dodge the obstacles, and knock trashcans to gain speed boosts. Knocking three trashcans can give you a greater speed boost, although it depends on RNG for the trashcan's placement if you want to trigger it. That being said, it can be hard to control your movement when the boost happens - it was hard to track what happened with my eye, either due to the game color or the objects that were placed too closely.

You keep your gold after you die, which you can use to buy upgrades. These upgrades vary from the useful ones like the one that increases your timer if you pick up gold to an item that has no effect if you buy it. The game forces you to die a few times in the beginning before you can get far into the game, making sure that you have all the upgrades you need. It won't take long until you have the bare minimum upgrades to finish the game, although there are also other challenges that you can finish to extend your playtime.

Challenges are abundant. Each is tied into a specific achievement, which might or might not require a specific item to do. The rest will be the challenges themselves. You need to finish the game without accelerating, without taking damage, and so on. The list goes on. It can be tough to finish some of them - I even found some to require RNG to beat, although there are accessibility options that you can turn on if you want to make it easier.

Length and Difficulty
I finished the game in 16 minutes. The challenges took most of my playtime; I had to replay the game several times for it. In the end, I had to turn on the accessibility options to get 2 of them, simply because I was bored and didn't feel like replaying it anymore.

Minit Fun Racer is an interesting short game, but it doesn't take long until you are bored with it. It was too short for a paid game, but at least it claims that every revenue goes to charity. It wasn't a bad game- it's just short, and won't be enjoyable if you play it too long since it doesn't have much to offer.

Don the duckish mouthparts of Minitman once again (and if you're doing it for the first time, go pick up Minit now) as he straddles his moped and embarks on the kind of vehicular misadventure that plagues many of us daily -- but which, in this absurd and upbeat Krazy Kat reinterpretation, becomes a perfect vehicle for gaming's simpler joys. Collect the coins, pimp your ride, go the distance, polish your skills, lean into the thrills, and discover that, in the end, it's the small things that make life worth living.

Full disclosure: Charity did not sway my purchase, though I hardly have a problem with that. Here's hoping this fine funrun is a lead-up to Minit 2! As it stands, Minit Fun Racer is a worthy purchase, a li'l crackerjack of a dopamine injection device for a trivial price.

Pretty fun little endless runner style game. It does kinda feel like a mobile game but it has a nice sense of progression and plus all the money goes to charity

A cute arcade racing roguelite in the vein of Excitebike and Paperboy. Not spectacular since in this genre the lack of colors severely impairs gameplay, but still a perfectly okay, above average browser game essentially. I bought it just to trick my friends into thinking that I'm a decent person anyway.

Minit Fun Racer is the kind of game which I would love to have on every platform. It has the aura of something done with care and love, while remaining simple, minimalistic and, maybe most importantly, fun as hell. You can defy yourself by going for all the achievements or just play some casual racing while enjoying some of the cool gimmicks (pizza delivering, police chasing...) the game is charged with. Great experience made even better when knowing where your money went to after buying the game.
