Is there a way to lock onto a unit as it moves during its turn?

Yes, select the unit and press "tab" and it will lock to teh unit.

If you see a button in the button right of the in-game UI called "menu" you can click that to then see all hotkeys in the game.

Once you are locked on to a unit you can use the camera rotation controls to disconnect the camera from where the unit is facing and control the camera angle yourself. You can also click once on open ground and keep the camera locked on but deselect the unit so you can see the whole battle field.

The above is one of my favourite things to do while watching a turn.
