From Space Game Review
'From Space' captured my heart right away. As soon as I started playing, I was astounded by how incredible the game looked and how gorgeous and mesmerizing the lighting effects was. You could say that after the cutscene ended and the game began, I was immediately engrossed.

This game screams excellence in terms of visuals, musical composition, gameplay and level design. My main complaint, which can also seen as a positive things—depends how you look at it—is that the game was too short and lacked endgame content. I wanted to invest dozens or even hundreds of hours into it. Although some great things come in small packages, not every game needs to be long.

After finishing it, the most significant realization I had was that it was memorable. Something I can't really say on many games I played lately. Sometimes there are so many games to play, especially at the end of the year, that if you already played a short game, you want it to be great and memorable. In this case, it was the case. This is similar to games I played like Cris Tales, Nobody Saves the World and Trek to Yomi.

However, the experience was so enjoyable that I didn't want it to come to an end. Though I was unable to play cooperatively, which would have made it even more enjoyable, I do have plans to play it again with friends.

The core gameplay is excellent, fluid, precise, responsive, and sounds and visually stunning. Despite the size of the weaponry at hand, playing with each one is enjoyable. All of your other class characters level up along with you when you do. It is possible to leave items for other classes to pick up. Both a controller and a keyboard and mouse work well for playing the game.

You can switch classes at stations scattered throughout the environment, which is supposedly helpful when playing with friends. A "support" character might be a better choice for you to switch to before a difficult engagement when playing with friends.

You won't find random stats on weapons in this game like you would in a Diablo game. In that sense, this game is more casual. In the same breath, I'd like to see the game have Diablo-like endgame content and more complex random stats for different weapon drops. As a result, it is also less exciting to open a chest or complete a side quest because the rewards are frequently insufficiently satisfying.

There is, however, a large selection of utility items. This is also a type of game where you want to avoid getting hit, even in the slightest. Each hit deals significant damage, and you need to adapt by constantly repositioing, dashing, and keeping an eye on the battlefield at all times. As you progress new enemies will be introduced. Enemies can also take on a more powerful form making them much harder to take down.

I share more about it in my full review:

An excellent top-down sci-fi shooter overall. Even though it wasn't very long, this game had some of the best action gameplay around. The problem is that you naturally crave more of a good thing. Because the core gameplay is so flawless and immersive, I'm hoping an update will include end-game content so I can invest countless hours in it. Can't wait to play it again with friends!

Disclaimer: played singleplayer. I do plan to play with friends on November 3rd.

Nice review. :) I guess at the opening launch discount price point, I'm not expecting the Mona Lisa of super randomized forever regenerating super replayable top down shooters. A 2nd difficulty mode unlock for campaign, at the least, would've been nice.

Sounds like if it sells well, maybe devs can add more Flair and Cake Frosting to the game. If it doesn't sell well, then the devs will have to drown their sorrows in Pepto Bismol. :steamhappy:

Thanks. When I first saw the game, I did hope that the game will have end-game content and more complex build structure. Those my desires and later expectations for games of a similar genre. This later changes to more of wanting as the game just felt so good that I didn't want it to end..

I hope that the dev have success with it so me might have some more content to it or end-game like content. Even if not, I will follow the dev for any next game it develops as I was in awe playing this game and it was a memorable one for me.

Something to do post story should have been in developement to start with...its a shame. Doesn't seem like the missions are repeatable.

Thank you for the wonderful review! While we think From Space is ready for everyone to enjoy, we also have a ton of ideas on how to bring more content further down the line. Your feedback helps us a great deal in that regard :-)

That's why I am here and what makes me happy hearing this. Communication with you via Discord was great and my goal was to help make the game as best it can be and for future content that I do hope will come. Thank you.

I loved the demo, how long the game is in hours? (more or less) and how many maps/zones has it?

think around 6 zones, and single player around 10-20 hours depends if you going with many tasks (side quests) or not. Some might do it even quicker but we'll wait for the community feedback on that as I played in a relatively slow pace to explore the game's features. I got stuck for many hours because I couldn't find a location and in total it took me 25 hours with quite a few side quests. Depends if the game scales in difficulty with friends (haven't tried it yet), it might be even faster but I haven't tried. Again, it's short but high-quality gameplay. If you don't mind a short but fun game to play with friends,

Do you feel this game has some level of replayability along the lines of DRG? I know DRG has a few years head start so it's had more time to create "content" but just wondering if the bones are there for a long-term relationship with From Space like we have with DRG...

As of the moment, no and it's not early access game. That's my biggest concern as the core gameplay is great and other small issues can be addressed. It felt like the game was designed for a casual gamer and not hardcore gamers--which is fine. But for me, a big top-down ARPG fan, it's lacking. It doesn't mean that I didn't have a good time with it, but with lack of end-game content and replay value, my time with it is very short.

I see a missed opportunity, quite a big one to be honest. But as I said, there is nothing wrong in going "light" as this also has its market. But I am disappointed. I don't see this coming as the core mechanics when it comes to stats and drops is not there.

It's still in my recommendation list because I had a lot of fun with what I percieve as cons, I see the appeal to those who prefer a casual take on the genre (I play Minecraft Dungeons a lot). But it's such a gorgeous game with fun gameplay that it feels bad that I don't get to enjoy more of it, that's all.
