I want to say at least 40% of your enemies (including some bosses) are resistant to inferno, so it's a hell of a lot tougher to blast enemies using inferno than it is with radiance...
I suspect late game inferno might be better, but early game radiance beats it by far...
Yes but there are also rings that allow you to cast magic with different catalysts if you want so it really does not matter which you chose.
Inferno is fire and poison, same as the souls series
Umbral is wither and cold/dread (the thing that causes your hp and stam to be halved)
In short all are good since they have two status effects so you always have some use to them. Not to mention buffs...
I'd personally recommend starting more radiant, and then you'll likely end up picking up some inferno later to try out different spells.
For example at 75 radiance with exacter catalyst +10 your radiant flare hits for 855 red numbers
At the same time 75 inferno with sophesia catalyst +10 your lava burst hits for 880 grey.
