The Order to Complete Each Area (Spoilers)
The level design in the game doesn't do a great job to let you know which area you should be doing next. I wandered into the Manse of the Hallowed Brothers early and was hitting a roadblock due to mob health/density. It turns out I skipped several other level-appropriate areas. I then moved over to Fitzroy's Gorge and was one-shotting mobs.

So I found this progression guide (a suggested order to areas) that I thought I would share in case others are getting frustrated navigating.

1. Defiled Sepulchre
2. Abandoned Redcopse
Holy Bulwark Otto boss fight
The Lightreaper boss fight
3. Redcopse Village
4. Skyrest Bridge
Pieta, She of the Blessed Renewal boss fight
Scourged Sister Delyth boss fight
5. Pilgrim's Perch
Gentle Gaverus, Mistress of Hounds boss fight
The Congregator of Flesh boss fight
6. Forsaken Fen
Mendacious Visage boss fight (Optional)
Hushed Saint boss fight
Beacon activation
7. Shuja Hamlet
8. Fitzroy's Gorge
Crimson Rector Percieval boss fight
Optional elevator to return to Skyrest Bridge
Ruiner boss fight
The Lightreaper boss fight (second)
9. Lower Calrath
Infernal Enchantress boss fight
Spurned Progeny boss fight
10. Upper Calrath Mining District
11. Sunless Skein
Skinstealer boss fight
Bringer Trio boss fight (Optional in Umbral)
12. Revelation Depths
The Unbroken Promise boss fight
Note: Return to Sunless Skein and use the elevator to Upper Calrath.
13. Upper Calrath
Beacon activation
Note: You need to open a shortcut to Skyrest Bridge.
14. Fief of the Chill Curse (through Redcopse Village)
Note: Go to Redcopse Village Windmill Vestige and open the big door near it.
Kinrangr Guardian Folard boss fight
Griefbound Rowena boss fight (Optional)
The Hollow Crow boss fight
Beacon activation
15. Pilgrim's Perch (Bell room)
The Sacred Resonance of Tencity boss fight
Paladin's Burden boss fight (Optional in Umbral)
Note: You can open the Skyrest Bridge shortcut from the Path of Devotion memorial Vestige area
16. Manse of the Hallowed Brothers
Abiding Defender Kyra / Abiding Defender Lirenne boss fight (Optional)
17. Tower of Penance
Blessed Carrion Knight Sanisho boss fight
Tancred, Master of Castigations (Reinhold the Immured) boss fight
Beacon activation
18. Abbey of the Hallowed Sisters
Abbess Ursula boss fight
Rapturous Huntress Lirenne boss fight
Judge Cleric, The Radiant Sentinel boss fight
Beacon activation
19. Upper Calrath (through Skyrest Bridge)
Note: To access Upper Calrath, return to the Hub area, cross the Pieta boss fight arena and head upstairs where you'll find a way back to the ruins through the shortcut you unlocked before.
The Lightreaper boss fight
The Iron Wayfarer boss fight
20. Bramis Castle
Damarose The Marked boss fight
The Sundered Monarch boss fight
Adyr, the Bereft Exile boss fight

Just like in any other Souls, if you can reach an area, you can complete it out of order. Hell, it is even recommended to switch areas sometimes, just to get stronger gear earlier.

Unlike most soulslikes though, completing some things out of order apparently breaks the game. IE I am basically softlocked and I *think* it's because I did the Lightreaper early. I beat Iron Wayfarer and the castle gate did not unlock. No clue what to do.

Unlike Souls games there's a Journal you can view which shows you maps with notes you picked up about important places to go. If the path you're taking isn't the one they have circled and pointed at with arrows in the journal, it's a side path.

You've saved a life today.

I was ready to end it all because of Manse but I clearly need to wait and go to fern first lol.

Now I'm damn near one shotting everything.

I literally did all of perch so that's completely cleared now.

I would like to give a general tip, that is valid for any souls like.

If you are in an area where enemies seems to have too much of hp and their damage is lethal to you and your damage only tickles them, maybe you are not supposed to be in that area yet.

If you have any other area open, or a potential way to lead you to another area, it would be wise to go have a look there first.

Sometimes Brute forcing your way through is not a good idea, cause what some might consider bravery, might be considered stupidity to others.

Always in life and in games remember; just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should do it.

But if someone still wants to brute force their way through an area that they are not supposed to be in, you don't have to do it alone, I can accompany you in your noble crusade because I am but a humble Crusader.

And / Or give you some gear and stuff if you like, to help even the odds against the forces of evil.

In Light, may this community walk :darkcrusader:
Like every souls game. You can finish the game in any order as long as you can overcome them. The problem is, you might mess up some quests. Missed some critical items or become overpowered in certain areas. The last one is not so bad as it happens often in the first play thru. The first two, now that sucks ballz big a$$ time.

yes you basically never go threw a bell door until you clear the depths and kill the umbral kid. then you open the tief door, then you open the other doors with the other key.

you need the rune of adyr to open the castle gate, it can be found in the abbey area.

The worst is that that the Umral Realm give you the constant feeling to miss something (many Items only found here). And at the other side you can mess up in the Umral realm quick when Umral mobs and normal mobs are mixed together.

Gives the feeling to play areas normal, and after clearing switching to Umral for exploration. Thats when Fearward Items (Eyeslot + Ring from Mulhu) comes in handy because the Fearmeter Buildup is slowed alot.

Curious how you 'wandered' into the Manse when you have to buy the key.. not the games fault.. first time in a Souls game? You never have to "pay" for progression.. SKILL ISSUE

You're a clown pos, I've been playing souls games before you clown demon souls ps3 and will win 10 out of 10 pvp in any of the fromsoft games. And IM saying the game is design is trash, just like your m. Only skill issue you have is being a man, little boy online always using "skill issue" as a excuse for a game having garbage design. Go back to your mothers basement

I'm lost for sure.

I just beat Twin Faces of Sin, but there was no exit in that areana. Only direction I could go was back. However, everywhere on the map behind me is clear that I know of. I must have missed a turning and an exit onwards somewhere.

That means going over the whole game map so far. ... Not sure I have the patience.

To make matters worse, the game areas have gates that you canot unlock until you have done later maps. Yet it never says that. It meant I have scoured maps looking for why I cannot open certain areas, which is extremely time consuming.

Go back over the bridge where you fought the poison-knight miniboss. There should be an open gate on the right now.
