Terrible Keybindings and Controller Binds
I was really looking forward to this game, but they made a serious mistake on freedom to customise your own keybindings.


Mouse and Keyboard:

Something that makes a great game also starts with being able to customise your own key bindings to what feels comfortable to the player. Yet the game forces you to play with their set keybindings for some keys on M and K, but especially on controller. It is very uncomfortable to be forced to hold down the left Ctrl key while also holding own the Q key at the same time and especially in combat. I wanted to change my lamp key binding to something else more comfortable to use as I'm a player who doesn't like to use Ctrl key for most games. Many games offer the choice to change Ctrl key binding to whatever you feel comfortable with, yet here I am stuck and forced to use the left Ctrl key to use my lamp, and the lamp is a very often and highly used tool in the game. Please, Let us be able to change this keybinding, not sure why that is so difficult to do. This key binding also makes it so that you have to use your off hand for throwables on left Ctrl as well as using your magic skills. Imagine having to constantly drag your left pinkly down and holding that key there with your pinky throughout the entire gameplay? that is very strenuous even for those who use Ctrl as a key binding in their games. Now if you use spell, you are stuck using this keybinding for your entire play-through without being allowed to change the key binding at all for your own player immersive comfort. At least now I know I will never be using ranged or spell characters in this game just because of this issue, even though I wanted to play with those characters as well. One last things for the mouse, when targeting an enemy, if I move my mouse even slightly it will switch to another target and screw up my entire combat game-play. I have to focus so hard on not moving my mouse on my mouse pad even a millimetre without it switching to some random target on the map. this has made me die already at the start of the game many times or taken unnecessary damage I could have easily avoided if this wasn't an issue. I want to fight the target I selected, not be forced to hold my mouse in place while in combat to not risk my targets being switched randomly and quickly. I have fought enemies, and i will naturally move my mouse, even when locked on to an enemy only to have it switch off that enemy im in a fight with to some random hanging dead body from a tree that you can interact with while out of combat, or it switches off to those interactive memory ghosts while in umbral. Yet in the keybindings it says the X and Z keys are what switches targets, and says nothing about your mouse switching targets yet moving your mouse around even slightly twitches targets for you, and there is nothing in setting to stop this. I can't even change this to fix it, it's extremely annoying where I Alt F4 the game and haven't played it since.



Controllers:

Now I don't really need to say much on this, since you have ZERO option to change any controller bindings at all which makes playing with the controller that much more un-enjoyable. Normal slashing games, with dodge mechanics make it so on your Xbox controller as an example: the (X) button as Light Attacks and the (Y) button as Heavy Attacks. They force you to use the top right bumper button for your main Light attacks which is annoying as this brings discomfort having to hold your index finger above your trigger finger. This is also very strenuous as the bumper button on controller are usually used as a simple execute for a skill or item as a one time use to allow your finger not to be held up there for long periods of time, which allowed players to not strain their fingers while playing. This bumper button would be better suited for heavy attacks if you were to use it as such, not the right trigger, it's as though they got their button mechanics backwards. Light attacks should be at the very least the Right Trigger, heavy attacks as the top right bumper as it's used less often than light attacks. Now for Blocking, why is the blocking not bound to the left trigger on a controller? Majority of games have left trigger either as the main source for allowing a player to be used in tandem with a main action in games. What i mean by that is take a shoot game, to aim down sights you hold left trigger as it's often used as part of the main source of an input in games, it's also more comfortable to use, imagine holding down the top left bumper as your main Aim down sights input and using your top right bumper as your shooting inputs??? would that not be uncomfortable? then having your trigger button to use a secondary items. Seriously, they made these bindings backwards. The left Trigger should be for blocking at the Very least. To fix this issue just allow players to customise their own bindings and not forced to use other peoples binding because it feels good for them. Only few games I've played that just because of their lack of custom keybindings for players, made it so I returned the game and never played it.


PLEASE PLEASE FIX THESE KEY BINDING ISSUES, it makes the game extremely un-enjoyable to play where im thinking of refunding it just because of the lack of freedom to changing our own keys to what suits each player.

Needs a Wheel for Ranged/Magic/Items/Lantern.
Needs to be more generous with the Lantern pull because on Keyboard you can't slow move and you often need to be on the Edge to pull something to you.
Needs Mouse Aim because lock-on is outdated design since 2008 and unimmersive AF. I shoot at tiny Heads in any Shooter, I can aim in the general direction I want to perform an action in, trust me.

+1000...holding the left control key down while also holding/pushing movement and buttons for lamp and ranged feels pretty f*cking bad

V to run and F to jump by default, yeah try to do that with your hand for 20+ years haha. These devs never played a PC game ever and it shows. Sad industry :\

While I do believe the game should have in-game controller remapping, this IS a Steam game, and Steam lets you remap anything you want to. The button prompts won't match in the game, but it'll functionally work.

It really sucks you can't bind sprint and dodge to the same key just like in all other soulslike.

god no that is awful game design. Adds massive delay to the key input since the game has to wait to see if you hold it to sprint or release it to dodge. One of the worst things about elder ring

100% agree on the awful lockon (using mouse). Why give keybinds to switch lock target if you're going to just do it with the slighest mouse movement - WHILE I AM FIGHTING.

There simply needs to be an option to turn OFF lock target switching with the mouse (or camera). This is the most annoying thing to me right now as it makes multi-mob fights super awkward and highly frustrating.

I know right??
I spent 30 minutes just trying to juggle keymappings to something that doesnt require extra fingers.
What the fork is it with this "V" to run? "F" to jump? Did they just throw letters in a bowl and pull out keymappings?
I'm finding a lot of these mechanisms really awkward to use. I mean, the lantern thing is really clever and unique - but the soul flaying mechanism where you use different keys in different situations, and having to *hold* CTRL for any of it while moving and aiming with the mouse is just ... poor. I think they really did not spend a lot of time optimizing usability.

How is it unbindable? I have it bound to Num 0 (Ranged Option)
There are no keys in the keybindings tab that are unchangeable
