Unable to play with friend using the friends pass

I was on ps5 friends pass my mate was at pc gamepass version. We where able to play first session no problem but I could not connect to him again after that. I suspect it was different gamestate since I had in my trial world every early boss stil unbeat. Was the problem that I checked yes to make backup save before entering my friends world or servers down in the early days of 2.0 update. Is there anything I can do to play the game with friend to end? I don't mind restarting but we are unable to complete the whole game in one session anyways.
