Smurf Hunting?
A setting is on by default.
A high-tier player invades a new player's game with high-end gear.
This high-tier player than stomps the ♥♥♥♥ out of two new people.
There's no way to turn it off unless I play Iron?

First few hours of gameplay, and I've seen the community is already toxic.

There's a difference between 'git gud' and 'lul, I'm a God, and you're a peasant'.
That's sadism.
I think this just ruined the game for me.

Cheers.

In coop, just purchasing mirrors to avoid invasions for a time.
Strong guy beaten you and your coop friend?
Just keep playing, I doubt you guys will get invaded before being able to progress (let alone before being able to gather 1000 runes) Redcopse Windmill is very early on, easy to farm 3500 safely and repeatedly, quite early and easy location to farm for anything you want, mirrors, mana stones, runes to lvl up, etc, and they also give good gear and weapons to start with).
The invader has no control over who they invade, nothing to do with the community.

I don't play co op so this might not work, but in the settings you can toggle off Online functionality whilst the COOP option remains on.

I toggled it off the instant some geezer invaded me right at the start of the game and 2 shot me when I dealt less than 50 damage to them. And they had the gall to hit a laugh emote as if they accomplished anything.

No I wouldn't because I would have the online functionality turned off, or in the case of Elden Ring, not be in a group and open to invasions to begin with

You would not even need.
ER if you are single player you dont get invaded unless you want and Dark Souls 3 you can jump off a cliff right after beating a boss and never ember, Dark Souls 1 you can just lose humanity on purpose and never regain, Dark Souls 2 you ... suck it up and turn offline mode (but then you will have a pletora of NPC invaders invading you instead of player invasions so you undersdtand the "suck it up" because you wil have ot deal with invaders, just not "player invasions" XD)

Yes... I know...

"In the case of elden ring, I would not be in a group and open to invasions to begin with"

... I am aware of how the games work...

Well, I can not know, only you (or your Steam friends) can see your games, so I can not know if you played these or not so I said it just as "a curiosity" about the games in case you dont know these.
Embers and humanity have enough benefits to them that disabling Online functionality is my go-to, Dark Souls 2 is Dark Souls 2, I don't even need to turn it off because it doesn't connect to begin with.

Well feel free to look again, didn't realise it was off.

But I literally talked about Elden Ring's exception in the comment that you responded to. You were telling me information I already talked about myself as if I had not literally just talked about it.

I played a lot of DS2 PvP and it was the Souls game with better connection to other players, no lag, no missing hits that should have connected, no "getting hit by lag attacks", etc and had plenty of PvP sessions being invaded at Bellfry Luna and a few other locations.
DS1 was a little and not good, DS3 is .. DS3, despite the lag it was also good.
I go without embering, I think I had given embers a lot to coop players that I helped (because most ended up getting killed too fast that I could not solo the boss before it happened) and still I had plenty of embers left on my account (I think some 120+, if I did not give more embers after that)., Humanity is the same thing, dont need the extra HP (in Souls and souls-likes I always try to not tank anything and just survive 1 hit without getting killed).

You were able to see, it was in the comment, not my profile
Well, yes, about ER I may have read and went carrrying on from there with the Souls games examples (tho I dont remember now if I had in mind you have ER or not when I wrote, about that, my mistake)
Play offline, as it'll save you headaches from being invaded by twinks and cowards. If you do play online, you can alt-f4 out of the game when you're invaded without any repercussions. You'll also start exactly where you were before you quit out. You lose nothing, in other words, other than the 30 seconds it takes to start the game and load up your save.
