Are items diagetic?

Okay so, in most games, items are just vague shinies you find on the ground. This is not diagetic, it's just gameplay
Not in LOTF, there are Item Mimics, which... mimic items. Specifically, the little wisps. And there are ways for the player to tell. Does this mean that in Mournstead, items are just... little golden wisps on the ground?

In most cases, there is a corresponding in-world item, like a corpse, a satchel or the actual weapon you're going to pick up, so I think it's really more a case of 'something catches your attention' signified through that glow ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That's actually a good observation/question. After looking at some screenshots, the shiny is actually part of the mimics face. So if the shiny is just to represent the item to the player but in universe it just looks like the item, would that mean that the mimic has a weapon or item sticking out of its face 🤔
