The parry window is completely fine and it seems your focusing WAY too much on it and you causing your own frustration, especially given it is just ONE of the tools tool for your character to overcome enemies and not the end all be all of your kit.
Here are somethings you can do without even touching the parry system:
- Use magic/thrown weapons
- Use Umbral pull to get a few free hits in and chunk their health by taking all withered (white) health away.
- traditional pattern recognition, of dodging attacks and then punishing.
- Choose a faster attacking weapon to have less recovery frames
- Choose a long reaching weapon to poke at a distance (spears, polearms)
This is not a game problem this is a skill problem (also lack of patience) and I not saying this to be elitist to to sound better then you, I'm just saying it like it is.
If you stick to parrying, you will struggle in late game.
This and the i-frames are much more forgiving than other souls-likes, so it should be a no brainer to prioritize over parrying most of the time. Parrying is very satisfying in this game but is not really needed.
Why am I taking damage when I block? Another problem I have is when an enemy does this predictable jump and vertical attack that you should be able to dodge / roll out of and they magically rotate / track you while you're dodging. I'm sorry, that's a broken system, if the player sees a vertical attack allow the player to roll out of the way.
Thank-you for the feedback, I was using a short sword and leveled up after learning the hard way that when you use Desiccated Vestige Moth you lose all Vigor. I upgraded my strength to a level where I can use a long sword that does approximately 50% more damage than the short sword but I'm worried about the parry window.
I initially went into this boss with the spear and found that I don't like the long recovery time between hits that leave you vulnerable with it.
I am slightly confused with Umbral, I understood very quickly that Scourged Sister Aelyth is near a umbral power source and so I destroyed that and I understand how to use umbral to pull enemies souls out of their bodies, where I'm confused is to whether or not I need to focus all of my attacks on the soul or get a few hits in the soul and then focus on the physical body. Thanks for the help.
You take block damage in souls games as well if you have low level shields, the good part about this game is that you take white health, which you can get back if you attack the enemy before getting hit again (good risk vs reward).
Also as far as tracking the I-frame are VERY generous in this game so if you are getting hit from a long windup move, you are reacting far too early.
You OVER COMPLICATING EVERYTHING it seems lol. All umbrtal does is give the enemy withered Health (white health) and this means that once they are in their normal state, a single attack will eliminate ALL of their white health. There are not 2 separate states or health bars for each enemy as you seem to think.
I say learn to understand the mechanics FIRST before you start calling everything "broken". Most of the things you call "broken" are literally just skill checks or skill issues of you now fully understanding timing, mechanics,...etc, so before you blame the game have some patience and learn the ins and outs of how this game does it.
Dodging is still much more generous and an easier way to avoid damage.
