Basically DS2 v2
I think also part of the problem is that is not convenient and easy to see for players (especially casual players).
My solution is:
Make a butterfly-y silhouette, like the ones for the NPC's in front of every boss arena, but make it a gold color, so the players can beckon from there - interacting with it will pull a random player in the queue. (To invite friends they still have to go through the vestige)
It will super convenient, and easy to spot for players and even better then in Dark Souls since no need to place signs.
Problem is the level range and region, when you do it, and well crossplatform prolly doesn't work at the moment.
I was farming the spot where you meet the 2nd ruiner as a normal enemy, haven't still yet went past that point while lvl 111+, and after going back to the beginning area I let myself be summoned and ended up fighting the adyr boss, that was my first co-op boss fight, weirdly it didn't give me an achievement for it in terms of beating a boss in co-op, but did get 300 coins, 2nd time I did a co-op I got an acheivement, but that wasn't random, used a temp "friend" who needed help.
You misread it a bit. Am not saying just those specific spots... but the beckon of random players be more visible near the bosses as well keep it in from the Vestige menu. Trust me, no casual player will go in the Vestige, the select a menu, then select beckon from list of 5 options, the click on it, and in menu that he does not know what they do.
Putting the random beckon with gold-y color will stand out, is very visible and convenient for them to see and use it (it can have a text added like "summon lamb-bearers from otherworlds to help you fight the boss" etc), as it is right in front of the boss area (a-la dark souls style)
