Soulflay feels useless in combat?
I dunno if I'm just using it wrong or something but the best use I've found combat wise is yanking enemies down off places, pitting them, or otherwise moving them into places they'd rather not be.
Using it to stun and deal damage doesn't feel worth it cause you only do like 1/3rd your damage and it only lasts about the length of most enemy down times between attacks anyways so you don't even get *more* damage. It's just less damage in the same time you would normally be doing damage.

There are ways to increase the damage you do to soulflayed targets, but I generally agree with you. It is useful for targets that otherwise are problematic to deal with, since you can more or less stunlock them with soulflay and keep hitting them while they are helpless.

Otherwise, the best use I've had for it is doing it when they're low enough on HP so you can perform the special Umbral Lamp grievous strike. If you're far enough in the game to have runes unlocked, you will guarantee yourself a rune drop from an enemy (if they can in fact drop one to begin with) if you defeat them that way.

Not quite, it only guarantees the enemy to drop their rune, if they have one.

Soulflay alone I don't see it good or bad particularly,
but I just ignore it most of the time beside drop some elite into the abyss.

I believe soulflay has its potential make combat puzzle interested,
but devs decided swarm players with mobs, just pick anything that can nuke it.

It guarantees rune drop, but nothing else.

Using it against mendacious visages when their shell is open gives grievous attack. You can also yoink their shell open with it and then do it again for grievous attack.
That is only useful usage i have found for soulflay.
