I'm not swapping all the time, I even started a 2nd NG because of mistakes on my previous NG, I was like, I want a different weapon, so I went fully committed with a plan in mind for my 2nd NG, get long sword to +whatever then swap to grand sword when you go through the Fief area, now I'm in Hanse Brothers area with that weapon at +7, I haven't upgraded anything else, and my character is Lv92, so is not a resource management problem.
However, early to mid-game is a bit stingy with shards so it is hard to commit to a weapon or you just find first one that suits you in terms of move set and stick with it. Higher price or time consuming nature of farming for upgrade materials is definitely limiting experimentation.
Vigor doesnt help getting large shards. Large shards themselves need to be a drop from enemies that occur more often, since they require more than small or regular.
The smith doesnt sell them naturally, only if you are a heartless, soulless monster.
Farming is literally a core part of Souls games. Half of the standard play is just progression, sacrificing build progression and potency for story and area progression, the other half is build completeness and gear/stat progression in exchange for time and monotony. If you wanna progress a perfectly linear game, Sekiro is more your suit. No grinding, no leveling, no boring customization. Everything you need is given to you after key moments.
Also, respeccing is always hard/limited in Souls games its part of the unforgiving, tough theme the games have. Diablo 4 lets you respec pretty easily, but Diablo 4 isnt a hard game.
4 weapons is pretty much perfect for a full build though. Technically, you only need 3 for the whole game. Main hand, off hand, and ranged item. Dual swords and a bow? 3 chunks. Great Axe and a shield, crossbow? 3 chunks. Two handing a Great Sword, shield on back, catalyst? you guessed it, 3 chunks. 4 chunks is, honestly, a gift, and the fact that you can technically get infinite from the by doing online stuff means you never run out.
Again, the issue is large shards.
- one shield + gerlinde hammer maxed out
- grand sword maxed out
- long sword maxed out
Now if I want another combo I have to conform to +9, I could want double hammers for my STR build, perfectly doable, then I'd have to give up on my shield or something.
I agree large shards are a problem, but when you want more weapons maxed out, upgrade prices are also a problem, I'd say even an exponential mathematical problem, and then the only 4 chunks per run.
I want to PvP as well, I want to consider my weapons collection for my build completed at the end of my NG.
True, to some degree, but considering, unlike souls games, there is no weapon swapping. In souls, you could equip 3 items in each hand, this game only has one. So there is far less of a need for more max weapons/shields/ranged. And if you use throwing items, like axes and hammers, you have another chunk to use. Two weapon sets is batter than 1, and honestly, those throwing weapons are pretty beefy in damage/stagger terms.
And at least, unlike most Souls games, we technically have the ability to farm a near infinite number of max upgrade items, mind you, it is through PvE coop stuff.
Reminds me of good old times in Demon Souls remake, on their Discord, duping was a blessing, there was even a technique for it, drop, exit to main menu and your items stayed on your inventory, I helped so many people with that, and was helped as well, nice community.
As is I was the only one dumb enough out of our group to buy this garbo game. I even was smart enough to get Lies of P first and finished that so there was 0 reason to do this lol. Oh well am looking forward to their next game unlike next LOTF which is more than an easy pass, won't even bother watching the trailer.
