Good mage build?

I like to play a char that is really manly a mage. The Pyro slam seem the best spell for my liking so far. But I really like to have a very versatile mage build.

I saw in a video a guy using some kind of spell that just put things on the ground of the air and did a lot of AOE damage, I saw him kill these boss clones as normal enemies lategame where you need to kill both of them at the same time for them to die.

What I really dislike stupid boring AF "buff" spells that according to his mid game builds you should have up all the time. Damn I used buff items with ma agility build and it worked but I kind of want to do things, cast cool stuff but I think this game is boring when it comes to mages.

I would like to have a aoe spell for crow control around me, a ranged spell and something, and not be occupied with buffing all the time. Also the "go to cheap range spells" seem just super boring.

I guess I will try the Pyro but I just wanted to ask if someone has tried interesting and good spells/builds. To me it looks rather boring.
