what are umbral scourings for?

hello, it says that umbral scouring can be exchanges when talking to maldhu but i don't see anything. is it for selling and getting souls?
also i beat the boss in the depths and there is an altar that says "seek scourings", without spoiling what do i need to do? i already have 108 umbral scourings...

You need a mid-game item to unlock boss items. Then you buy those boss items with the umbral scouring. Seriously, learn to use google before creating a new thread for the same topic answered 100 times.

the altar is for a specific ending. if you have cleansed ANY beacons disregard the altar entirely and continue the game as you have been as this ending has been locked out after cleansing any.

Edit: the scourings that you have many of are for trading in order to get gear from bosses you've slain and collected their... essence or whatever it's called. You have to have collected an item from early on in.. pilgrims perch? i think. It's on a platform only visible in umbral waaaayyyy down. It's either from an Umbral belly or it should just be on the platform somewhere. could be on a hanging corpse that you have to shoot down. not sure

Are we getting offended on behalf of someone else now? I explained to him what the item does, and the suggested to search on google first. When was I negative? I know that winter is coming, but it's a bit too early for snow flakes.

Defending someone that's simply looking for knowledge from someone that's being a condescending ass isn't being a snowflake. It's being a rational human being. Something you should potentially consider a bit more heavily before you talk to people on the internet.
