Enemy scaling is weird?
I don't know if I'm just going to area's where I'm not supposed to be but the enemy scaling feels weird sometimes i just two shot the enemies and then 5 minutes later it takes like 15 hits and if I get hit twice I die, It makes me think that like in dark souls 1 I'm just going the wrong way or something, but I can't really find any other paths. Is it just normal for enemies to suddenly deal way more damage or am I really going the wrong way?

I'm not sure if there's any actual enemy scaling but some areas have stronger enemies than others. In addition, some enemies even in the same area are much tougher. Another thing to look out for is if an enemy's health is blue there's a wisp thing in the umbral realm that you need to use your lamp and destroy first before you can kill that enemy.

Where have you gone? I've seen people going to the fief early and getting molested by the enemies there (this area is one of the end game ones), I believe the general progression should be pilgrim's perch -> Forsaken Fen -> Fitzroy's gorge -> lower calrath -> slums -> Mining district -> Sunless skien -> Upper calrath and then to the Fief, this is not counting the two or three optional areas you can go to in order to gather upgrade materials for your weapons.

Alternatively you can save the fief for last and go to Bell Rise instead, then save the abbey of hallowed sisters for last.

Yeah I get that some enemies are just tougher than others, but it's when entire area's just feel so hard to go through that it makes me feel like I'm not supposed to be there yet.
Is the game just very linear and I am just supposed to keep pushing forward (like dark souls 3) or is it branching and maybe I'm just going to "wrong" way (like dark souls 1).

I freed a blacksmith and opened a door with a bell and all of a sudden everyone got a lot harder

That path leads to bell rise, which is more of a late mid game area leading into one of the path towards an end game one. (Best done after you've been through fitzroy's gorge) It's extremely hard if you are just coming there from the main path. Your first goal after pilgrim's path is to head towards the forest area, that's the intended progression far as enemy strength goes.

It's not linear, but yeah some areas have stronger enemies than others. The game gives you the freedom to approach that how you want but if you're going to go places with tougher enemies you better be good enough to get through them. Like in DS1 you could beat the entire game as a level 1 character, but it's going to be tough as hell and you better have mastered it's mechanics.

Let me guess:
Are you talking about the entrance through that pilgrims peak locked door? This would be a door that you opened with a key right next to Vestige of Blind Agatha?

That is actually a VERY high level area, and should be come back to, you probably missed some entire zones.

The other possibility is the door with a bell above it, that is also a high level area.

Look at this guide to get back on track:

The issue here is that you can buy the key too early, if you never buy it you will be given it later on when it's far more appropriate to go there, buying it actually ends up with you having two copies of it, making it seem as if making it buyable was not intended originally.

Thanks I'll look how I have to go and look again if I feel like I'm getting lost again.
Some of my textures are also bugged which might also make it a little hard to see where i have to go sometimes.

If you get the key later then indeed why can u buy it in the very beginning that's a kinda stupid

I had a miserable time at first as my progression was a complete mess, fighting multiple holy shield dude + crimson rector combo, went to that cancerous Memorial , then cleared the Manse , all before finding out Forsaken Fen is a thing.
So yea, it is exactly like ds1 in terms of choosing the wrong path.

Agreed, those issues, added to the fact that the EXACT same enemy has more HP in diff areas is weird. Specially when this game swarms you so much.
FreshRevenge Oct 18, 2023 @ 8:12am
I know certain enemies are more spongy than others. Like the metal spike heads enemies that bash down on you. My character is like 85 and fully upgrade weapons but they still are my pain in my arse.
chaosandcoffee Oct 18, 2023 @ 8:15am
you can go to the "wrong" area, yeah, the easiest way to do this is early at the Belled Rise vestige, if you go through the door (you have to open) instead of the pathway or the lift down then you're in an area with way higher level enemies (same types, just more HP/damage).

I'm not sure if there are other places where this can happen but yeah, it's possible.

You can probably buy the key so that when you're already more familiar with the game on a second playthru you can go there and progress early. Or suicide run for gear. I also bought the key early on so I got a couple weapons and armor sets but noticed that one of the bosses barely took damage and I kept getting rekt by regular enemies, so I went the other way. I don't remember what the area is called but it wasn't the Fief (snow place)
