It may not be for everyone, but I think I speak for most people when I say Umbral mechanics are what makes this game actually fun as opposed to a generic ♥♥♥♥ Souls clone like Lies of P, who don't bring anything new to the table(Except a more boring setting than normal souls games).
All I can say is, try to give it some time, see if you can get used to it. Otherwise just go for another game, you know how it is.
It reminds me of Soul Reaver...And it's one of my all time favourite games. In fact, it is very clear that they literally saw Soul Reaver and went ham on the idea.
Some areas are very slow going (swamp cough cough) but I learned to appreciate how large it was and what the devs were trying to do with it. It is one of the best areas in the game in terms of open-ness.
