Tossed those aside and now rock a giant axe in one hand, flail mace in the other. Come get some, demons.
I like them for their faster attack speed and their attack pattern. I do prefer using grand-weapons though generally but I've played this entire playthrough (umbral ending) with short swords and axes (axes have same attack pattern+speed). I wouldn't say it's the "meta" but it's not garbage, I still beat most of my invaders even, though i typically use spells, the faster attack speed allows me to actualy hit the enemy right after casting a spell that they dodged - instead of the slower wind up of regular swords or larger weapons.
Lefthanded sword of Stillness if you want frostbite which is very strong.
Ebbs or Kukajins for poison (Kukajin's has bleed though)
Chopper or bloodlust for the burn (bloodlust has bleed too)
they tend to apply their debuffs fairly easy due to their moveset and speed and all the debuffs except for bleed and explosion tend to be very useful.
