One other thing to consider is that just because you can do a trade route twice as fast doesn't mean you'll make twice the money - towns only have so much money to spend and if you come around with trade goods too often, they won't have regenerated the money you're looking for.
Also, as to high cost of fixing cars, if you always have plenty of lubricant and decent repair skills, you will never have to pay for any repairs. Only downside, and I agree, is the availability of fuel. Which is scarse and very expensive.
True, but that 1/10 times they get the wind behind them.... they go light speed :)
