exactly as stated, I hit play, screen goes black as the game starts, then comes back to steam as the game crashed right there. NVIDIA drivers version 546.17

same driver, same problem.
I'm still on 545.84, and it's crashing on start for me
I switched to the previous version of the game and it started working for me
Can confirm, when I updated the driver the game stopped launching, crashes a few seconds after launch. Using the previous version of the game did help in my case as well
I've reverted back to 537.58 (0ctober 2023) and the issue is solved now.

I've been crashing on start too - but i don't have nvidia - i'm on an M1 Macbook Pro. I thought maybe it was just me, because i have have too much in the background... i'm going to upgrade the iOS to see if it stops
Edit: updating my operating system to Sonoma didn't help

Trying to play it for the first time. I see a few stars scrolling in the corner of my screen during the intro but then the video just jitters/freezes and then the game crashes before I can even get to the menu. Attempted to set RenderLandscapeMode = 1 since some old forum threads said I should do that, but it didn't work. I'm on GeForce GameReady 546.01 and I have an RTX 4070. haven't tested linux yet

If the driver update/rollback doesn't work, try going into Properties -> Betas -> Betas Participation and chose "legacy open GL" from the dropdown menu. See if that helps, it did for me running on an old AMD card.
When trying to use 'Previous Beta' and the update 'finishes' the download would keep saying 'resume' and never actually finish. I don't know why or how but when I moved the installation to another drive it finally seemed to work,
Updated to newer drivers to v551.23.0, still crashes. Game is dead.

I can verify that this worked for me. Updated NVidia drivers were probably the cause for me too.
I've found a solution that worked for me (GTX 970 and latest 551.23 nvidia drivers):

- start the "previous version"
- change renderer from vulkan to dirextX11 end exit
- change beta channel to "none"
- enjoy v2.3.2 with new nvidia drivers.

EDIT:
Works also with "opengl core". Vulkan API seems to be the culprit.

This workaround seems to fix it, but still needs the devs to apply this to the default and fix the vulkan render.

This works perfectly, thank you for figuring it out and sharing it
