I restarted Steam. I restarted the game. I replayed the ending (load 100% and finish), and got one achievement. So yes, there certainly are achievements. Did they work? No. Do they work now? At least one does.
The area before the final gate has a few small statues that appear for.. finding things off the beaten path. I got maybe half of them. Loading a save warns me that I may lose some progress (that's bad!), so I am reluctant to go hunting for achievements now.
EDIT: Also, the descriptions for many of the achievements are the same. That seems wrong.
Thanks Sam! Based on the achievement list... appears there should be 6 progress-based and 11 secret ancestors. Having beaten the game + found 3-4 ancestors... I should have earned 9 or 10, and I earned 0. Appreciate you looking into the problem!
What would be great is:
a) achievements are checked/triggers upon booting the game. This is something that every game should really be doing, since weird stuff can happen and achievements can fail to trigger in the best of times.
b) have the ability to delete your save file and start fresh, somewhere in the Options menu
