Just make a "Saved" folder copy. You can make it even during game, no need to quit it first.
From what I've heard, the glitch saves over your current file with a blank copy and then IMMEDIATELY saves a backup of such said blank copy, replacing both files. As both are then uploaded to the Steam cloud, you're screwed. Your progress is gone.
You can always get someone else to give you a copy of their save file, but that's not so great. I create a manual backup after each play session so that I'm not buggered too terribly if it happens to me. Here's to hoping they eventually patch the issue.
Sorry for your loss!
Problem is when you start the game up it overwrites your cloud save, and since you have no idea what is happening you lose progress.
The way this game starts when it is fresh play through sucks. I like games too have a proper start screen with a load save game option. When it did it too me I thought that it was just running through the opening cinematic for some other reason, wasn't until it asked me too choose a difficultly that I realized my save got nuked.
When I sent in my bug report I suggested they add a proper multi save functionality with the ability too manually save the game too a different save slot.
