"In an effort to make it easier to jump from one character to another, Gotham Knights allows all characters to share XP. If you raise one character to Level 10, everyone is at Level 10 and has all of the Ability Points (AP) that goes along with that. That's great until you get to the Knighthood skill tree. Every character gets a fourth skill tree, which also unlocks their traversal tool, but it has to be unlocked for each hero and that makes it more of a chore to switch between characters in the late game."
this is from shacknews, after a quick search. the 3 skill trees have shared points/levels, but the knighthood tree would require separate efforts to unlock
personally, I'm a big DC and Batman fan, so I wanted to play all for. but the xp is a super grind. however, there are some VERY grindy achievements if you're into that, like stopping 250 crimes, so there's a bit of motivation there.
if you want to swap, there's no real reason to except to enhance the story/immersions of involving the bat fam. Otherwise, doing 4 playthroughs with each character isn't bad either, you'd just have to wait and grind for all the collectibles. as for gear, one full run of a night should get your unplayed character(s) the best gear.
So far, you can choose at the start who to play, but you can switch between them at the game's HQ, they all level at the same time, but the gear, i believe you will need to get yourself or craft it or something....i have stuck with batgirl right now, so someone else who has done more than just a single character will have to answer that bit.
I also don't like GTAV's way of story telling, i prefer to pick one and stick with them, maybe even see different view points of a story, that would be cool.
this is correct. levels and skill points are shared but you have to get crafting mats individually for each hero. at times you will get certain gear that is shared through all of them so they wont be completely low in gear wise to fight. there is no down side in not playing certain heroes except for missed dialogue in missions.
also to note challenges are not shared either. for example the knighthood challenge to unlock their special movement mode has to be for each of them.
