And it's a single person developing.
Dedicated servers would something for consideration further down the line when the game has matured.
1. Official dedicated server support is already planned from the dev if I recall. He said he was going to fix up the netcode before that though.
2. We already have some "dedicated servers" setup by the community. Essentially they are just really beefy computers hosting non-stop with the host afk. Within the server listings, they usually say "dedicated server" in the listing name or something along these lines.
I have only been playing on the dedicated servers, and have had no issues with the host leaving.
also played on a dedicated server it was the 2nd greatest match ive commanded for was so glad host did not quit even though he was losing
A lot of players just want to finish a round no matter win or loss but unfortunately most of the time on the current dedicated servers the rounds last 15-20 minutes as many of the 'usual commanders' you'll see on these servers treat the game as a single player RTS. When they get sick of losing or they tried some extreme meme tactic, they'll end round just to jump back into the com seat next rounds. Rinse and repeat.
Dedicated servers used to get full, but due to those tactics from commanders you'll see more players in private rounds and non dedicated servers. As I write this, there are 20 players in password locked servers, 1 in public and 6 on dedicated.
Right now it's best to find trusted players from the discord or your group of friends to host a round.
Once a few different QoL mechanics are added, we'll see a much better server/player count.
