Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden

Is there a functional difference between Banishing and Ascending spirits?
I just finished the first "real" haunting, and was a little surprised to see both as options. Lore-wise, the difference is pretty clear, and I'm assuming I'll run into spirits that either don't "deserve" redemption/ascension from a moral standpoint or who can't/won't accept ascension due to the nature of their business, but is there a practical difference between them like there is between those options and Blaming the living person?

You can fight the spirits you banished inside void rifts later and the choice you make at the end of a case affects the NPC dialogue and their disposition towards you. Don't think if it affects the ending
Banishing is a forceful passing on, while ascending is a gentle passing on. Obviously the latter is the "good" one. Banishing is fairly neutral based on the morality of the world. Blaming is seen as an "evil" action.
With merchants it can affect the prices they buy/sell goods and equipment quite significantly, for instance in Hammer and Tongs if you banish the ghost Nellie will favor you and if you ascend them her disposition becomes ill-favored. On the armor she sells it makes a $400 difference (600 vs 1000).

Thank you for this. Super helpful info.
Yes, blaming the humans vs. ascending or banishing the ghosts makes a HUGE difference. No spoilers, but there are four different endings based on the choices you make. You (roleplaying the characters) have some serious moral choices to make. And as mentioned above, those choices have consequences all through the game, not just at the end.

Yes, it's just a story, and those are just pixels and code and not living humans- but the writing and voice acting suck you right into the story.

thanks a lot for the information, now it's clear how to choose between Banishing and Ascending spirits
