Also had this problem. My friend was able to join me when I hosted but I got this error when trying to join his game. Not sure if it a port forwarding issue on his end. If not I have no idea why this is happening.

Response from the developer. "Thank you for report but we cannot reproduce this issue. Might be some issue with your security software and firewalls?"

yea might be anti virus - NATs being strict - VPN can cause some issues - or portforwarding.. cant thing of anything else

I turned everything off and checked it a hundred times, it doesn't help

Are one of you VR and the other not? Some shenanigans are necessary to get it to work in this case I gather. Since steam doesn't like that you're in "different apps".

I figured out the problem, have the host reduce the number of islands to 16, this should help

No, we're both non-vr. I understood about 16 islands, I'll try it!
