I play with 2 other people and I would say we are all busy 100% of the time.
Certainly more fun with friends, since you can do more things at the same time, or take the time to fly a plane or whatever, or make your plans even more complex. But I found it was absolutely fine solo.
It's not only extremely viable but pretty easy to boot.
what kind of mods might make single player more fun?
personally, i'd like aircraft and ground units to be able to scan and identify enemy units on their own better, rather than me having to go in and scout an island manually with a camera on a plane. sometimes this can take me 5-10 minuets doing rings round an island, hunting to make sure ive found every target, before i can plan and launch a land/air assault. if i miss a single target it can cost me a valuable unit getting destroyed. while im sat stuck on that camera focused on an island, i have limited situational awareness and tbh it gets boring after a while. i'd like to be able to delegate that task to the ai, or just make it proximity based.
the issue of being able to auto pilot the carrier itself, with way points, rather than manually piloting it at the helm controls, has been raised time and time again. that'd be nice...
if you combine these 2 options, you essentially have an RTS game, with the option of manually piloting/controlling almost everything if you choose to, but good enough ai unit control that you can orchestrate all of your units in combined operations as a solo player.
beyond that and as a personal addendum, modding should give us the flexibility to add or remove new types of units that change the game dynamics, for instance, submarines (which ive seen someone has added/modified swordfish into?) or the possibility of some sort of stealth mechanic for aircraft outside of visual identification range, or ground units only detected by radar/IR. idk, the possibilities are endless as long as someone can figure out how to code it and its supported by the game engine.
but as i say, i'd prefer that it be simpler to juggle everything remotely, rather than being punished for not using units manually because the ai isn't as capable as a human operator. the game provides the premise that all units are basically drones, which should be able to operate independently on a tactical level, but need dictating to on a strategic level. however, in my experience, the friendly ai is too limited, which requires the player to jump into units and save them in tricky situations, rather than being able to fight for themselves.
maybe im a little out of date here, i haven't played in quite a while, but i keep meaning to come back and play another campaign, until i look at the mods that are available and remember how multiplayer focused everything is and the pain of it being so close to what i'd prefer as a solo player.
its still fun as it is, don't get me wrong, and im still recommending it. but lets face it, this games focus on multiplayer has been and always will be what hold it back from a higher player count, in a world where getting people together to play a game that might take hours is a pretty hard ask, not to mention the connectivity issues involved. there certainly are still small communities out there that play multiplayer semi/regularly, but for me, i get far more relaxing fun from playing solo PVE at my own pace, rather than PVP.
