Why do CIWS boats and vehicles only have 100 ammo?
That's pathetically low. They're practically unusable. The only point for things like that is defending against missiles when the carrier isn't around but with that tiny ammo cache they get to shoot at like 2 targets before running out, AI carriers fling cruise missiles at an absurd rate. And their pathetic range keeps them from being useful against planes too. Only stationary turrets with their infinite ammo and carrier guns with their immediate resupply from the carrier's stockpiles are usable.

Seriously, it seems the only effective AA we have is to drive the carrier into the middle of a fight.

CIWS capacity used to be 1000 20mm, but was nerfed because it was too powerful in PvE. I agree that went too far.
The 20mm container for Mules is still the original size.

Wasn't the nerf to the damage output? I know it was stupidly powerful at launch but now it'll ping off most armor. I wonder if they just wanted to change how much the carrier's guns have loaded in them but changed it for all units?
It would be nice to bump the ammo capacity up again. I could probably put 200 bullets in my pockets!

Isn't that just for the carrier? I don't really care about the carrier, the problem are the autonomous units.

My mistake, I misread the question.
Real life CIWS carry much more than 100 rds, anywhere from 500 to 2000 for 20mm.

By the way, the Needlefish are affected as well, with 100 rds for their gun, why even build them?

Also, yes, they nerfed the CIWS vs ground units a long time ago for damage, this more recent cut to capacity wasn't needed.

That is false. 20mm is the most OP munition / gun type. Equipping 4 to a petral enables you to clear all islands easily.

Versus ground units the rounds have a small AoE effect. You can feel this when shooting at targets in the water as if it impacts the water, it won't produce the AoE. However if the bullets impact land you'll notice it.

You can even kill other cwis units if you maintain proper distance and altitude. The only thing it's not good for is taking out other ships or carriers. It will do damage to them but it's extremely small to the point of being trivial.

It's been nerfed a lot on ground-based weapons. I think it may have originally worked the same from all guns but direct-firing CIWS turrets was extremely OP (greatly outperformed 30mm turrets when used manually) so they got nerfed like crazy. An aircraft with 20mm will kill vehicles in a massive radius with just a short burst while a ground based 20mm gun will bounce off the armor of ground vehicles. Try controlling a Walrus with a CIWS gun and fire it at ground targets manually.

Not all 20mm guns are equal.

Ahh yeah I forget about the ground stuff. Never played when you could control and shoot the ground cwis.

The aircraft guns are so good I just delete all the npcs on an island and drop a single walrus with a virus mod from a petral then move. Kinda sucks the fun out of using ground units. I could just choose to not use the guns, but meh.
Yeah, ground is practically useless for capturing, if you could mount virus bots on an aircraft (you can with some mods) then you'd never need to deploy a single ground unit.

Part of that is that ground units are no threat to air units except in extreme circumstances. The only limitation for planes is ammo.

CIWS boats could theoretically be useful to protect barges against cruise missile strikes but they have like two intercepts worth of ammo so they're useless.
