Is single player too hard?
The Short:

Why do you feel like single player is difficult? What sorts of problems are you facing and how do you think it could be improved if at all?

The long:

I've been prowling around the CC2 discussions and especially looking at peoples take on the new major update. A lot of people keep saying they'd like an autopilot added to the carrier, among other complaints that the devs aren't giving them any help with the single player experience.

I really enjoy reading the comments and participating in the discussions of the CC2 community and have learned a lot about the game just by talking to players and hanging out with them. I've met players of all skill levels and aptitudes and do understand that for some the game can be very frustrating and challenging while others have few troubles sinking a carrier with little more than an albatross and some IR missiles.

Recently I've seen a lot of activity from people claiming that the games single player experience is lackluster, I'd normally second that opinion but the claim seems to be that its too difficult which I personally dont agree with. People are saying things like "They should add an auto pilot" or "I wish the devs would give us AI companions so we dont do it all alone". I respect peoples skill levels and understand that the game can be challenging but I am DEATHLY curious to find out exactly what challenge these players feel and how these proposed features would improve the game.

I'd say the issue is that there is so much to manage and you don't have enough time as a solo player to manage all of it. You need to juggle piloting the ship, managing weapons, deploying and recovering craft, your logistics, and repairs all by yourself. I'd really like it if MicroPose gave you some AI crewmates you can put on positions on the bridge so that you have less juggling.
Time management can be a big issue yeah. I can very much see your point and I'd raise you that during carrier battles (arguably the climax of a campaign) things can get SUPER hectic with you trying to balance every system on the ship at once, launching torpedoes and countermeasures, arming and disarming weapons to balance your carriers speed and firepower and actually fighting the enemy carrier.

I try to break things down into segments. I normally do repairs when I'm waiting for an island to finish capturing, handle the logistics while im in transit between islands and try and stay mindful of my carriers speed, even then sometimes you still run aground or forget to order that important new chassis. Wearing all these hats can very much be a struggle.

That can be a good strategy, but honestly, I think having some systems like weapons and piloting at least should at least be partly automated. Alternatively, having a mod that enables that automation would be equally helpful.

Long Range Strikes, fuel tanks, and being aggrieve are key to victory. find and sink the a.i carrier as soon as you can.
Yeah nah I agree. I scout islands far ahead of time and when possible dispatch the defenders well before the carrier shows up. I make it a point to keep myself and my vehicles out of danger and generally have a lot of downtime waiting for vehicles to arrive/cap/return from a tasking. Rarely especially in SP do I find myself racing across the bridge doing two things at once.

That said I still like to hear about the experiences of other players. I feel like it helps me to better connect with others when giving advice or when discussing the game in general. The more we understand about the community the better we can all complain as a family, I'd hate to just come across as a "skill issue, my way or the highway" kinda guy lmao.

I love the single player. It's all I've played. Auto pilot imo would be a huge QOL improvement but that's only bc I try to do too many things at once and forget that I'm in fact not actually moving anywhere

I play single player a lot and can honestly say I've never really felt too overwhelmed. Though I also know that everyone is different and I respect that. I would say if you do feel overwhelmed that you should take the polar bear plunge and just try a public server but they're all dead so thats a wash. People are generally a lot nicer and inviting than you think and even after you crash every single aircraft in the carriers inventory they may scold you for doing it eight times but they'll still teach you what they know. This communities great unless you have a different opinion of its development lol.

I wouldn't say I get overwhelmed I just get forgetful. Personally I've never felt any pressure from the AI carrier. They capture at about the same rate and I do and by the time I get just a few islands I have what I need to take it out. My torp game abysmal though lol. I use either the needle fish with torps to do it for me or use bears to get in close and take out ships.

I also do alot of unnecessary stuff bc I think it's cool and fun, like using a Mule full of droids to make a garrison on islands I capture that are near the enemy carrier, or try to get two mantas to crash into each other.
It takes 3 IR missiles to kill a needlefish and 4 to kill a swordfish. Just fly a manta in there with flares and drop all four on the target from close range, its not an easy trick since you need to be good at diving and evading CIWS fire but once you get the hang of it you can sink anything with nothing but supplies in your warehouse and a jet lol.

2 Torpedoes runs you around 100 credits IIRC. 4 IR missiles at 25 a pop costs the same, so your only really paying for flares roughly 4 credits per use. Assuming you defend against 4 missiles (the max) thats 116 credits spent for something between 800 - 1200 credits return. With a minimum payout per boat of 200 you do not loose money and assuming you miss a single torpedo save roughly 45 credits. That said unlike torps you put a lot more on the line by flying your 1200 dollar jet fighter into harms way, so weigh your options

P.S: The formula for Torpedo timing is D/48 where D is the distance to your target in meters, the answer is the time in seconds you should round this down to the nearest tenth. I'm still dogwater at torpedoes even knowing this so take the advice how you will.

I REALLY REALLY WISH THE MULE WOULD REFUEL AIRCRAFT! DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA HOW GREAT IT'D BE IF I COULD PLAY WITH NOTHING BUT PETRELS AND MULES! my god what a dream

Ha yeah. Does it also not re-arm munitions? That would also be pretty choice.
I read your guide on petrels, good stuff. Improved my usage and options of them. So thanks for contributing that to the community.

Your welcome! I'm glad I could help in any way. Petrels always play a key frontline role in my campaigns and it makes me happy knowing people are out there giving them a shot. Funnily enough I pretty much avoided them like the plague for my first few hundred hours of the game and it wasn't until a took a chance on them that I started to realize how much of the boring stuff they speed up lol.

Theres definately a lot more nuance and subtle things you can do with the game as is, I distinctly remember being bombed with IR missiles in a PVP game by albatrosses of all things without the CIWS defenses ever splashing one, so be sure to interrogate any other players you come across for their strategies. You never know what goldmines your sleeping on lol.
