I think the only advice I can give you Val is to try and make use of the wait alpha, bravo, etc commands. These let you set waypoints for your vehicles to advance to. They will wait at your desired location and only continue their route when given the go code, which can be given rather quickly. With good use of these commands you can have ground forces perform coordinated strikes on targets and group pushes into locations with only one command.
If all the source code were avaliable there would certainly be some places where the UX could be improved with little effort.
On the other hand, a larger team working together should have an advantage over a lone wolf.
You can skip the "select camera in menu" step by simply pointing at the object and pressing the R key/X button (Interaction B). So the sequence to take a manual move to the left is: point vehicle control - E - point vehicle - R [wait for conncetion] - 1 - R - A [long press].
