seriously though, would also like to know if there could be mod support because that would really help with replayablity if players can design custom stages, enemies and maps etc.

Yep it's come up quite a few times - we love the idea, just that we are stuck with an engine that makes it very difficult. That may very well change for future installments which are being worked on!
