Is it just me getting that impression when looking at the screenshots or does it feel similar while as well?

It's like Ogre Battle 64 and Fire Emblem had a kid but didn't want anyone to know so they put it up for adoption and a decade and a half later you see this person on the street and they look awfully familiar.
This game is in the same vein of tactical rpgs that grew out of the square enix games (fft and tactics ogre) though I think the dev has said it is supposed to be a fire-emblem like.

The Ogre series was by Quest, which was only bought by Square after most of the Ogre games had come and gone. Although some of their employees had left and joined Square earlier, interestingly enough working on FFT. Unfortunately Sqeenix dissolved them, so chances are poor we'll ever see another new Ogre game. Would be nice of them to re-release a game that isn't Tactics Ogre yet again, too. Until they do, this is one of the few games that scratches that itch.

That said I'd say this game and Unicorn Overlord very much continue the spirit of the Ogre Battle games forward for I am thankful as I have a deep love of the OB games!

Also the similarities are only true for the Tactics Ogre Spin-Offs. March of the black queen and Let us swing together are the two coming mind right now.

The Original is basically a 1993 blend of conquering a different regional Map every stage utiizing a pausable Real-Time system and Grid-Based Auto-Battler fights.

Between stages the troop management was pretty much the same as it is in the Tactics Ogre games. The whole formation thing is a difference ofc since you have to make your own squads by placing the characters on a 3x3 grid where the action they will be using depends on wether they placed in front, mid, or back row . Closest thing to that i've seen in other games would be rooms in Soul Nomad and the Wife Beaters.
