Who can ambush?
I have Light Infantry squads fighting in the woods that didn't trigger an ambush? Some LI is unable to ambush or enemies can nullify it?

Archers and horse archers can ambush once you get the appropriate tech. And at least half the squad has to be light infantry. Two assassins in a group with a healer and 2 zweihanders will never ambush any one.

In the squad setup screen, the background changes if the squad's balance changes enough to count as LI or cav. I'm pretty sure the basic green-plains background is for standard infantry, and thus doesn't qualify for ambush or charge.
