Other tactics games with squads?
I loved building little squads to fight other squads in combat, rather than the usual 1v1 in other tactics games. Are there any others out there like this one?

Unicorn overlord has the best squad building I've seen in a while.

It's even more focused on squad building than SoW, with each character having many different abilities that you can set use conditions for (i.e. use heal on second turn, or use this attack when there's a heavy enemy unit with less than 25% hp left, that kind of stuff), personal equipments, unit type counters, and all that.

Downside is that there's very little strategy (as in unit movement, force distribution, etc) involved, as it's not a turn based game, and one squad can just fight as often as you want and just solo every map.

ogre battle 64 has squad building too. langrisser and der langrisser arent exactly squad building but if you like sow youd probably like those too.
You might like Soul Nomad. It's a Disgaea-ish mash-up with Squads. Has an enjoyable story, great tunes, fun gameplay. Has multiple endings too so lots of replayability. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1535610/Soul_Nomad__the_World_Eaters/
Edit: Edited to mention that is an actual NIS title and not just one that is similar.

An oldie, but really one of prototypes for this sort of game; Bahamut Lagoon for the SNES. Was given a new fresh translation too in 2020 (sadly the lead translator, Near, passed away the year after). I always kind of considered it a predecessor before the genre was even a genre. It has a decent story, and a mechanic where every squad has a Dragon companion that acts independantly (but will follow strategic commands like aggressive, defensive etc).

Its a very old game that you could probably find online. I'd say "get an emulator and a rom" but of course that would be hiiiighly illegal so I wont. *nudgenudgewinkwink*

Shining Force is also extremely good. It's actually available on Steam in the SEGA collection. It doesn't have squads, but it's a very good tactics game.

I'll definitely be looking into Bahamut Lagoon and Ogre Battle 64 some more. Thanks again for all of the recommendations!
