No more farming xp?
Seems like the arena farming got patched. Can't gain xp from archers anymore. How are we supposed to progress the story with our underleveled units? I got units at levels 2 and 3, while all the enemies are level 6. This is on ludicrous difficulty.

We determined that sitting and absorbing arrows in the arena for a thousand turns was unfun and definitely not the only way to level up

Level differences wouldn't change based on difficulty

Thanks, so how do I get past my current mission? My units are too underleveled and get wiped too easily. Even Diana can't solo everyone.

I used the arena to grind leadership. I didn't matter how unfun it was, there are not enough enemy units in the entire game to grind up underpowered squads. By limiting grinding to leader units, the squads will naturally get up to fighting power after a few fights. Now Barnabas' ability is pointless since disabling his squad makes him more likely to take hits, for characters that need to survive the battle to get experience.

There are definitely enough, and Barn's skill is definitely not pointless - give it a chance, games shouldn't (and this one doesn't) rely on a mechanic like infinitely sitting and getting attacked by useless attacks

Is this pre-patch info? Grinding is no longer a feature. I am playing ludicrous permadeath difficulty and stuck at Chapter 5 (right after you lose Jules, Sybil, and Barnabas). All enemies at this stage are level 6. All my units, except MC, Stefan, and Diana, are level 1 and 2.

Theoretically, a player can be permanently stuck at this state with no options to progress.

How are you defining grinding? Yes we removed infinitely eating arrows, and that's it, that's not really grinding

Also, levels adapt to story progress, it's the most generous xp system I've ever seen in a game that plays like Fire Emblem

Arena rewards you with plenty of catch up mechanics as well

I talked about chapter 5 being overly difficult in a different thread a few days ago. If your on a high difficulty setting, expect some losses, the temple can be used to rez and heal, go back and forth until you win. Unless your very well optimized from the start, unless your on captain difficulty or below, the odds of beating the turn timer on chapter 5 are slim, especially if your playing permadeath.

Well, not so much grinding but more so opportunities to level up units. Currently, my squads are made of new recruits, so they are level 1. All my "leveled" units permadied or are with Jules, Sybil, and Barnabas. Basically, I have no access to high level units at the moment. The goal is to get them to level 6 so that I can progress the mission and get S rank. I'm lucky that I have an arena token to gain some xp, but what if a player does not? Even with an arena token, the enemies are still too strong with firearms. My measly 4 level 2 squads can't beat that. I am down on gold. What's the next move?

Barny is a star at making high leadership cavalry units regardless of whether you arena farmed... I never did and still ended up with LDR 50-60 Cavalry by the midgame...just make smart usage of his charge and hit and run abilities and stop charging him into pikeman squads...

It's pretty much the same as how, when the game was just released, people would complain about light infantry units being useless because ppl slept on the ambushmechanic (great to see you nerfed this a bit dev...ambushing anywhere simply because you started on rough terrain was a tad too OP xD)

I don't build calvary armies. The 8 heavy squadrons I run (3 'Sentinel/Centurion', 3 'Paladin', 2 'Champ/Zwei (w/Devon) are designed to counter the ambush mechanic among other things. It's not possible @ LDR 62 without save scumming. One run where I ground my heavy leaders to LDR 76 before CH. 10, they did not get to LDR 92 (9 units) until CH. 26. Grinding every leader to hold seven units @ CH. 10 (LDR 88, 82, 76) improved survivability and countered the game's RNG, the calvary charges of the last chapters (and my terrible luck). Now we have to choose between completing the tech tree or having an army to even get to the last chapters.

Yes, the heavy squads are not invincible, my Sentinel squad's check by CH.26 by the lead knight squad a few updates ago is why I ground to LDR 88 before this update. I'm using a salvaged save to test if this strategy still holds in this update.

You can still get some xp and cp from killing things in arena, just not an infinite amount. It's honestly still a reasonable way to catch up a few new recruits, but no longer a way to somehow gain 20 leadership between stages or get everyone to tier 3 by grinding CP super early.

This seems totally reasonable to me, as arena grinding made some of my runs too easy before this update. We'll see how ludicrous goes ..

If it's any consolation, Ludicrous is very very difficult on purpose, that's why we named it

ludicrous
adjective
so foolish, unreasonable, or out of place as to be amusing; ridiculous

:D

If you're playing on ludicrous surely you already beat the game AT LEAST ONCE, so you should know there comes some points in the game where squads leave temporarily, thus you SHOULD have trained at least 1-2 teams of pure recruits/mercs to fill in the shoes of the leaving units so you don't brick your progress. There's enough gold from objectives to bring dead units to life on temples as long as you don't get them wiped. Unless it's the boat mission.. but for the mayority of the early game, you have enough temples to keep your leveled recruits alive. Make suicide squads if needed, take your time to clear stuff and forget about throwing units into a meat grinder just to get an S on the level. Enjoy the struggle.
