What determines the main character starting class?
So, it's been a while since I played the game, but in my old saves the main character always started the game as a "captain."

But now I tried starting some new games with different settings, and one time the female character started as a "strider" capable of stealth attacks, one time the male character started as a "cleric." Other times they were just "captains" as usual.

So what determines this? And what classes are available?

I thought it might be the starting questions, but in a new game+ I don't get those and also sometimes got a different starting class.

Didn't see anything in the patch notes either. Edit: I checked the class list under tutorial, and there's only an entry for "class:Captain", not the others.

You can change Hero class in the ch2 home base - the starting one is determined by the question answers at character creation

Yep, I just found that out when I hit the town screen for the first time.

Seems there are also different options for the advanced classes later. Seems like a neat feature.

Would appreciate some entries for the new classes in the class list, though, so I can see what they do. (I assume the cleric heals.)

Either way, thanks for the fast response!

huh, does the MC get different classes to start? unless they always did and i just never noticed.

The MC different classes is new to this version patch. Strider is a light archetype which affects movement and does a stealth attack, Cleric does in fact heal, and then the heavy archetype which was the original. The starting questions affect the class and the class can be changed.

Was also curious about this. My buddy bought me the dlc while I was at work, came home, made a new save, and didn't notice I was apparently a cleric. Blew my mind when my mc healed first round, then attacked second.
Made a new game, answered aggressively, and got a captain instead...

I am really happy about this. It always bothered me I couldn't do this in ogre battle 64, my favorite game.

What does different class do? The description in the tutorial was still the old version.

You can switch freely so, try it out. 3 Archtypes, Captain, the original heavy fighter type with Guardian. Strider, a high skill, light unit with Guerrilla and Stealth Attack (turns you into a weaker Stefan basically) and Cleric, similar to a Templar, no skills. Nice perk, you keep the decent armor in all of the choices, which is pretty sick.

I don't know what to do with the starting questions.

There is no punitive reaction to any response, all answer boost some stat whether it be STR, MAG, or SKL growth or your starting LDR. No wrong answers

Advice on the most practical stats to shoot for? Do you want your MC to have a higher combat-related stat growth or higher starting leadership (with no growth boost?)?

Also which is the best of the classes for them?

Leadership is always nice, but unless it got changed, leadership from objectives is always shared with the MC (regardless of who takes it) so you'll end up with enough either way, a stronger combat stat MC is easier early on, at least I think so. Depends on how you use them though, I haven't played since the original release, so maybe it got changed between then and now, but you can't really go wrong with the general archtype, since it was the only option available back then anyway. The other two will depend on what you want your MC to do, healer is probably the most obvious one, plus if you keep your MC in the middle row you can probably skip out on having a healer in your squad, strider is probably also useful for hitting the backrow if you prefer not to use rogues at all, the general one is the heavy infantry type, so think of that as your tank or DPS of some sorts.
