Firearm units(Gunners, Dragoons, Cannons), and I think Crossbows as well, instead only use the Weapon stat for damage, but they have a much higher weapon value when compared to other units, and they generally negate a large amount of the target's armor value.
The damage seems somewhat random as well, so I think the Weapon stat is just the Average roll(and then strength/magic modifier is added after the roll).
As for Armor, I think it is just a flat amount of reduction(because it is possible to reach 100). You then add either a fraction of your Strength or a fraction of your Magic as additional defense.
So if a unit has 50 armor(and, say 50 strength), and is attacked by an enemy dealing physical damage that has 40 Weapon and 40 strength, you might only take 25 damage(total damage is 80, but armor reduces it by 50 and your Strength reduces it by 5).
These numbers are just made up, I am not sure if this is the exact formular.
That is one of my issues with the game as well. I only have an "idea" of how it works, but no hard numbers to go on. I have no idea if 50 Strength gives 5 extra damage reduction vs physical attacks or 10 or 12. I just know it helps a little.
