It's not a bug. Very intentional.
i love that the devs of this game are very responsive
Hospitaller doesn't have another option to stay mounted, while Paladin does, and Priestess can go to Templar. So we didn't want to nerf the Hospitaller -> Valkyrie upgrade, even though we thought that Paladins are already strong enough that they don't need to be an actual healer - they are a combatant first, with secondary healing
"Just guardian" is a bit harsh. Guardian is what makes Paladins very tanky on the frontline, especially when combined with various artifacts.
Valkyries are great for mobile healing squads/cavalry charges, but they have some weaknesses that Paladins do not have.
