Resolution
Any way to increase the resolution of the game? Kind of looks awful on 32" monitor

The dev is working on it and is fully aware of the problem. So far people with 1440 monitors seem mostly to have resolution problems. Blurry text and pixelated graphics.
Changing IntegerScaling.Active = true to false in your mkxp.config file has helped some people. It definitely made my graphics look better than they were.

It isn't just 1440. 1920 x 1080 looks awful too in full screen. It's fine in windowed mode, except the window is tiny. There's a large window option, but that is pretty blurry too.
I have reason to believe the problem is down to the game being made in a rather elderly engine.
I was told by the dev to go on Discord to get it sorted whilst trying to merely discuss it with other users on a thread in this forum. He then locked the thread. This and the fact that he seems to think that "native resolution" refers to the resolution of the game and not too the native resolution of your screen itself doesn't help, but then neither does shutting down a conversation between others who were trying to find a solution for themselves.
I bought a Steam key and I'd rather not mess about on Discord, especially as this is not an early access title.
Is the "native resolution" he wrongly describes the native default resolution of RPG maker VX Ace? Perhaps, as this game is written using a modified version of said decade year old piece of game-making software. If so, it's no wonder as it's default resolution is 640x480. Of course, you can scale it up, but of course it looks horrible, and if image sharpening is used it goes all blurry usually. Which is what we have here.

if you go into mkxp.conf in the game directory and set "integerScaling.active" to true and "integerScaling.lastMileScaling" to false, you should get the largest possible integer scaled image with black borders in fullscreen mode. might look small at some unfortunate resolutions but the image should be sharp.

Yeah looks horrible on 1440P 32" monitor, pretty disappointing and unexpected for a modern game release.

Typical, you get a really good game, one that you have been waiting for and your pretty much stuck playing on low res. Typical. With the games engine being so old do you think there may never really be a fix then? I want to know because if there is no chance I can stop trying to find a solution and just except how it is while I hope and wait for Symphony of War-2. :D

Usually game engines update, is this not the case with this one or is it a defunct engine?
On a side note, I have watched this being played on you-tube and the graphics look super sharp, which has you asking yourself the question, how?

Tested this and find changing integerScaling.active to false looks much better especially the text.

Yeah, I will give that a go. Must be worth a try. Thanks. I'm aware I might be coming across as extremely grumpy on this issue.
Anything official by the Devs has a very poor prospect of being sorted.
I include below a link to a thread in RPG maker central, which explains the problem very well. If they're correct, however (which they seem to be), I was wrong about it running at 640 x 480.... It actually runs at 544 x 416. The 640 x 480 is actually the result of modding and then using anti-lag scripts to stop it from being unusable.
Getting it any higher is seemingly possible, again using modifications of various kinds but VX seems to run extremely badly when this is done
On the Steam thread that got locked, the Dev was saying that they would help people get the graphics looking to "their individual personal tastes".
It's not an issue of personal preference, it's an issue of the game operating at a resolution that is outdated by more than a decade and headache inducing on any modern hardware. Anyway , I will go give the suggested fix a go.
This whole thing just serves as another cautionary tale about nostalgic games that get "overwhelmingly positive" reviews on Steam.
If I'd known it was more RPG maker stuff, especially using the 2012 version, I wouldn't have bothered buying it.
I mean, my native resolution (1920 x 1080) is not even the standard any more and I class my 3550h/gtx 1050/ 16gb laptop as 20% above potato by modern standards, but people on the RPG maker forums are making this stuff on Celeron processors.
It has been something of an education for me finding all this out.

Tried the fix. The pixel art looks a bit better, but the text is still awful. Like playing a ps1 on a tube televison.

Yeah but it is passable and playable it's just so bloody frustrating when you can imagine what it would be like with just your basic desktop resolution, like 1000 times better.

Thing is if the dev knows this can never be fixed with this version I would much prefer he just came out and gave us the bad news so that we can give up trying to fix it and get on with playing it. There are no hard feelings on my behalf, I understand the predicament that he must be in. What he can take home to bed is that he has made a really good game regardless of being yesterdays tech.

BTW: my fix integerScaling.active to false is what improves the text.

That was the only variable I changed, the other one was already set as instructed.
But, yeah, it's playable, just ugly and bad for my aging eyes. I don't think there was any deliberate intention to deceive with this problem. Just a lack of understanding of modern expectations.
I'm more salty about what happened on the other thread, but it's no big deal.
I agree that, if he'd just come out and said what the resolution was and why it was stuck at that in a polite and professional manner, then that would of been a lot better as, as you say, a lot of us have held off starting properly whilst waiting for the fix.
The game has probably been in dev for a few years and when he started, the engine he modified was probably only 5 years or so old. I just wish he'd moved on to a later version.

I really don't understand why anyone would use RPGMaker VX Ace in 2022.

The whole RPGmaker game scene is quite weird and potato -oriented, so it's not THAT surprising, just a bit ridiculous.
And their target market seem to be a lot more forgiving about stuff. Didn't the maker of "Omori" spunk all the kick-starter money on breast implants and then vanish for 2 years instead of using it for actual game development or something? Then the game eventually came out, years late and everyone seemed fine about it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that's how I seem to vaguely remember it. It's a funny old world.

Hahaha, Indeed. Funny as flook.

I'm old, with bad eyes, and therefore rarely see the poor graphics that players typically complain about.

Not this time.

My setup is with a modest 32" monitor at 2550x1440; QHD is not exactly cutting edge.

Even with the config adjustment above, it remains very visibly annoying.

Disappointed the devs sound like they don't take this seriously! :cozykcdknight:

Well we have been told they are doing/working on something like make individual resolutions what ever that means. But at this time I don't know. With them closing the last thread for no real reason it's my guess they are a little kissed off with the subject. So I guess we wait for some sort of news, good or bad.
They could always remake the game using Unity or the unreal engine. I wonder how long that would take.
