If I was going to compare the MC to an Ogre Battle protagonist, definitely more of a Magnus than a Destin.
Oh yeah, when answering the initial questions, the MC comes out better for the early game if you answer like you're a meathead bully or a gold digger instead of an inspirational leader. Sounds silly, but that way they'll start with more strength or skill and better growth in such, rather than magic (not so useful early on) or a one-time bonus to leadership that's a drop in the ocean anyway.
When promoted half way through the game, he can revive 3 units per chapter which is essential since temple is harder to find later. His first attack is a magic AoE after the promotion as well. Reasonably durable and with good squad composition can do anything. Not the most OP but at least he can get the job done.
With that said, I actually do use the MC as a backline assassin blocker pretty often. Between their decent armor, hp and skill the MC only really fears eating consecutive crits while outside of Cautious Attack. That's pretty unlikely if you take Skill growth answers in the prologue and Unscathed basically fixes the problem straight away. Personally, I roll with Skill answers and Immortal Spirit instead since that covers practically everything when teamed up with Cautious Attacks, but YMMV.
