In a later playthrough where you know all the tricks, start from the very beginning planning to overcome Casimir's army in 12. You have to be quite prepared.
I swallowed my pride and endured the losses, i really thought the game went from 'here's 11 easy mode tutorial maps, now the real game begins'
That was brutal, do players even gain victory by beating casamirs army, and is there a unique story change if you do?
Nope. You get the same cutscene - assumedly Casimir sent more waves of men at you like the dignified and honorable chap he is. All you really get's the achievement and I think a little faction XP.
Big faction exp boost if you win it. It's really not as hard as you might think. However, you have to start the game with the plan to actually win it. A few key artifacts to save scum for. Now, this was what worked for me.
St. Teresa's Bulwark, Hulking Pavise and Officer's Regalia. Put all three of them on the MC's squad. Fill out the front line with 2 Sentinels if you can. Why? They have Guardian trait which is 25% boost on defense. The Bulwark gives front row another 25%, Officer's Regalia gives everyone 15% and Hulking Pavise reduces firearms damage by 15%. You also want to make sure you attack and use Cautious for an additional 35% defense boost, and make sure you're on a little fort in the southwest. If you can save scum and hire Zeteni the Undying sentinel merc, he's awesome. He has a lot of hitpoints. You should have a bodyguard trait skill. Give that to him and arrange your squad so that the MC is behind him as that will give Zeteni even MORE defense.
It's not stackable as there is diminishing returns, but, you can load it up enough that the musket shots will due practically nill. You have to attack every turn though, obviously take out weaker remnants and always use Cautious so that you can keep that bonus.
Load the MC up with and a Red Dragon 2 Paladins and Templar if you can. That's 3 healers, and the Paladins if you unlock the one tech can give a defense boost to the healer.
Diana's Squad you want to do kind of the same if you can. Paladin's and a templar. If you can do the same artifiacts that's great. She might be low on the leadership though so you can ditch the Officer's Regalia and replace it with a Imperial Battle Armor, War Banner, Ataraxia etc. whatever you need for leadership boost.
Abigayle is the other linchpin though not as crucial. She should have dragons and you should be able to have at least 3 on her I believe. Nibbler and 2 others you can have for a total of 4 (1 on MC). I might be off on the number.
The others aren't as imperative but they should still be developed and filled out as much as possible. Even cannon fodder troops help. Ie. have a soldier with high leadership? Make him a squad leader and load him up with fighters if need be. They're cheap and he can probably take out at least a few guys before he's wiped.
Last thing, basically everyone other than MC and Diana should be on the right side of the map so you can hopefully crush the reinforcements there within 2 turns. MC wants to be on the little fort on the left, closest to the right hand group. Diana, should be in front or beneath them.
Some good mercs to keep an eye out for in the beginning.
Centhos the Muse. He makes a GREAT leader as he's cheap, a prodigy and has Light for his affinity for leadership gain. He's a great squad leader.
Zeteni the Undying. Exceptionally valuable for this fight, especially if given the bodyguard trait. He also has a trait Immortal Spirit which will basically revive him if he suffers a fatal injury once in the chapter.
Cloudrender Athelis. Rare to see as he's a dragon flyer. He's expensive as hell but he could be useful. I'd rather skip him at this point and get him later personally.
I put one squad to the left with really high evade, normally they wouldnt get hit by a single arrow in fights. But when the cannons came, they just died. Now I need to start over and try it with the defensiv approach, sucks -.-
It's not about the difficulty but the fact you have to play it first to know what to do, I managed to get 2 sentinels which is minimum to tank the guns, but it was by accident not because i planned it.
I was planning in replay the game in max difficulty later on, but with this cheap trick broke the inmersion :(
